Okay who’s writing these prompts, children in elementary school? Is a list seriously all you’re after? I want to write. More than a list. Maybe that’s part of it, turning something so simple and basic into a writing piece. Well I’m here for it because I truly do love being here and honestly the last thing I thought of before I went to sleep last night was, I wonder what the prompt will be tomorrow?!
So here’s the thing, I’m not now nor was I ever, a connoisseur of fruit. I eat it, I sometimes even enjoy it, but for the most part I force myself to eat it because, well, it’s supposedly healthy. And like everything in my life that I lack, I blame my childhood. Ha ha just kidding Mom, but not really. Growing up I remember there were basically three types of fruit in existence, apples, oranges and bananas. Actually bananas didn’t exist in our home much because my Dad detests them, even just the smell.
Oranges were a hit or a miss, depending on the level of difficulty to peel them and also whether or not they contained seeds. So I don’t know, that really only left apples still in the game. Our brown bag lunches for school consisted of a sandwich (most likely cheese whiz), some type of sweet thing like whatever Mom had baked or a granola bar, a juice box and an apple. And honestly, I’m not sure how often I actually ate the apple.
I don’t know why and honestly, I’ve never asked, why Mom didn’t buy more fruit when she grocery shopped. There were definitely times in summer when I recall there being watermelon in the house, and probably other fruits too but what I remember the most is apples and oranges. I remember her buying or picking blueberries but they were usually for pies. It was probably a budgetary thing. Suffice to say, because a multitude of fruits were not available for snacking purposes growing up, I still today find it hard to incorporate them into my diet.
I have tried to NOT pass this on to my children. I do always keep a variety of fresh fruit in the house. My oldest loves fruit and my youngest loves fruit, the two in the middle seem to have more of the anti-fruit genes in them.
Back to the question though, my faves would be (in no particular order), bananas, as long as they aren’t too green or too ripe. Watermelon, as long as it’s a damn good one, which seems to be hard to find these days, they’re so hit or miss. One fruit I never ate until adulthood are mangoes and I do really like them but because we live so far north, I feel like they’re not always readily available in our grocery stores. And the last two I’m not sure are fruit or veggies but they’re going on the list anyway, cucumbers and avocadoes.
