Daily writing prompt
What makes a teacher great?

Happy Sunday! Okay just a few short months ago, we answered the prompt “who was your most influential teacher and why?” I wrote about my dad, who wasn’t a teacher by occupation but a farmer. I wrote about all the skills he taught us and the way in which he taught us.

He instilled confidence in me from an early age and his method of “here’s what you’re gonna do, now go do it” worked well for me. Because he believed in me, I believed in myself.

For teachers in a classroom, the details need to be a bit more refined. I’m speaking not as an instructor because I’m quite new to it, but as a former and current student. I’m currently enrolled in an online course geared towards adults who teach post secondary education that are not teachers by trade, just experienced workers in their field or occupation who are now teaching it. If that makes any sense.

Even though most of the students in my course are over the age of thirty, the basic rules of classroom etiquette are comparable to elementary or junior high. Which is much appreciated, to be honest. The online classroom is a safe and inclusive place, each person is able to ask questions at any time, no question is a stupid question etc.

Having been out of school for so many years, I was very nervous to go back but our Instructor has made it so simple and seamless. I expected we would meet on Teams but most would have cameras off, mics muted but she asked us on the first day to keep cameras on so that we get a more interactive experience.

I think the thing she does best is she always keeps us in the loop. She lets us know where we are, what’s coming up, what’s expected, plus a thorough review of where we’ve been. That eliminates the wondering, which would make me nervous.

I mean it definitely helps that she has a soft little Kindergarten teacher voice but it’s more in WHAT she says than the tone. She’s truly great at her job.

  1. I can see how being as thorough as she is helps.

    1. Absolutely! It’s the not knowing that makes me nervous (in any aspect of life really) and she does a great job of keeping us informed.
