In 1997 my childhood best friend was planning her wedding to the very first “real” boyfriend that she’d had. We were 19. What did we know.
The plan was Barbados, keep it small, just immediate family and one person each to stand up beside she and her soon to be husband.
And so that’s what we did. His parents, her parents, a brother each and myself and the best man Jody. There may have been an odd extra family member in there as well, I really don’t remember.
It was my first time travelling anywhere outside of Canada.
The scenery was spectacular and we first landed in St Lucia to pick up/drop off passengers there. A whole new world. I remember being in awe. The airport had no doors on the building, like you could just breeze on in. I thought that was really interesting.
I took a million photos in Barbados. The pink, yellow, robin’s egg blue houses are so pretty!
Nothing really of interest happened there, I mean besides the wedding. We went deep sea fishing, I was super duper sea sick the entire time and had to take a Gravol tablet and spend the 3 hours laying down on the lower level of the boat on a bed. That was gross.
It was just before Christmas and I recall thinking like wow, it’s December 19 and no snow and I’m at the pool and Christmas carols are playing. Very odd experience when your whole life you relate Christmas to cold and snow.
Oh actually the most fun thing about that trip was the overnight we spent in Toronto on the way there. We stayed in a hotel near the airport. Of course being young adults, we ventured to the hotel lounge that evening. Myself, the best man, the bride and groom and the 2 brothers. Picture the cheesiest karaoke lounge possible. Now picture the most fun ever. The best, biggest and longest laughs of life. Even the bride’s brother, who was the squarest guy alive, found some liquid courage and got up to sing.
It was a fun trip and although their marriage ended in divorce, I’m happy to have had that experience.
Now back to reality, summer concludes today. I have mixed feelings about it. It’s supposed to hit a high of 27 degrees Celsius today, which for September, up here, it’s amazing. And then tomorrow the temps drop significantly. In a way, I am tired of the heat but it will be sad to see it go. Hopefully winter is good to us.
