Drop in the bucket

Daily writing prompt
What major historical events do you remember?

On January 16, 1990, I had been 14 for almost a month and I wrote in my Calendiary:

“the war has started, they are calling it ‘Operation Desert Storm’ now.”

Each day that followed I wrote “the war is still on”, as though I was surprised it lasted more than a day.

At the very top of the page just above where it says January 1991, I had written “OPERATION DESERT SHIELD BECAME OPERATION DESERT STORM WHEN THE WAR STARTED”, just like that in all caps.

Besides this, I vaguely recall the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster in 1986, (I had to Google the year because it is vague in my mind).

In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell and I remember watching that on the news but it seemed a world away.

The SARS outbreak in the early 2000’s I only remember because I was asked to work some overtime giving out the vaccine for it. I was working on Psychiatry at the time and one of the people I had to give the vaccine to was the Psychiatrist’s wife and I remember thinking ‘oh god, please let me give the most painless needle ever’.

My oldest child Bella-Lena was just over two months old when 9/11 occurred and she and I were visiting my parents near Swan River. Of course I recall those moments plainly that morning, thinking at first what I was seeing on TV was a preview for new movie.

I’m so sick of Covid and talking about Covid to be honest. It was a brutal time to be a nurse and a challenging time to be a parent to teenagers.

All in all, it’s a drop in the bucket when you think about people who lived through World War one, the Depression and then another bloody World War. Those are the tough people.

  2. i totally agree with your last point. i think it’s why – when I was younger – I felt like senior citizens at the time would see just how overall privileged we were. This was probably why they bullied us, for better or for worse, to a higher standard because we never had to experience the disruptions of a whole world close to nuclear war. Mike

    1. Yes absolutely Mike…and it’s still reflected I think, in the way “boomers” have a hard time relating to young people today.

Oh, I thought you were a Capricorn, but I really like Sagittarius’s vibe too šŸ™‚
I remember 9/11 and the SARS outbreak from your list, and of course the COVID outbreak.
I guess I remember more European events anyway, and not positive ones…

    1. Yes just barely a Sagittarius, Dec 21!
Funny how most of what we remember as historical were negative events hey?

I guess we hear and remember the negative ones the most because they affect us more profoundly; a mixture of fear, anxiety, and despair is much stronger than happiness and relief. Also, the news is probably meant to warn us more than entertain.

  4. Yes, there are a few of those ‘moments’ you first hear the news. I remember shopping in a big empty department store and the sales lady told us that Diana had died. I remember thinking why the hell she would be telling us that, but in hindsight it was a momentous occasion.

    1. Oh actually I do remember that too! I was with my best friend at the time away on a ā€œbacheloretteā€ weekend before she got married…sad those boys lost their mom so young but I was always team Camilla ā˜ŗļø

      1. Really? I didn’t know anyone was Team Camilla! I feel sorry for her, what she had to put up with, but the media was so Diana. So again, in hindsight, I was probably wrong.
