We say Bonjour

Daily writing prompt
What was your favorite subject in school?

School was school to me and I don’t think I could say I had any “favourite” subjects, only a couple that I hated the least.

They were English, or in the younger grades Language Arts, and French. I think you typically enjoy the classes that come easier to you and that you tend to get higher marks in.

When I was growing up everyone starts to learn French in Grade Four but once you get to high school, it’s optional. I opted to keep taking French as an elective class once I got to high school because I felt it would be an easy credit. Plus my best friend was also taking it and we would be in the same class.

We had so many laughs in that class at the expense of our sweet and somewhat nerdy friend and classmate Brad. While the rest of us would at least try to fake the French accent if asked to read out loud from the textbook, Brad either didn’t care to feign the accent or maybe thought he really was.

If you imagine a French person saying “bonjour” in it’s proper accent, (I’m not really sure how to spell the way it sounds), but then along comes Brad who says “bawn-jur”. Zilch attempt made to sound French. We thought it was the funniest thing ever.

I didn’t mind geography because it was pretty much straight memorization and I’ve always had a thing for maps and globes. I like to know where places are and still do. If someone mentions the place where they’re from and I don’t know where it is, I immediately go on Google Maps and check it out. I just have to.

Not to creep you guys out my fellow bloggers, but if you’ve ever mentioned where you live or somewhere near it, chances are I’ve looked it up. It’s just this weird compulsion.

  1. Interesting post! With all my French classes I never came close to fluency.

I also love maps! I received a world atlas as a gift last year and I love it!

    1. Lol I’m also not fluent which is too bad but at least I can pick out some words here and there.
I bought a really nice atlas at a thrift store one time, such a treasure!

  2. My oldest daughter loved French classes so much, in part because her teacher was charming and glamorous.

  3. Your writing style is fun to read. The last bit about looking up locations made me laugh. I loved learning and speaking French. Geography not so much, however my interest has grown through the years.

    1. Thanks Michele! It might be fun to read but my sentence structure leaves something to be desired…I try and write just the same way I speak though.
I wish I could remember more from French class honestly. Reading it is one thing but listening to people speak it without subtitles would throw me for a loop!

      1. The conversational tone of your writing highlights your personality. 👍🏻 Same, “use it or lose it,” applies.

      2. You’re too kind Michele 😌
And yes, you’re right about that! I’m considering putting my youngest in an all French school next year when he starts Kindergarten so that would allow me to dive right back in.

  4. I had a similar experience with a book we had to read aloud in class with a character named ‘Dante’. I kept pronouncing it ‘Danty’. It took me quite a while to realise why the teacher and just some of the kids smirked.
