ASDF

Daily writing prompt
Write about your first computer.

In the little K-9 school I went to, the grade 5 homeroom teacher was a very forward thinking guy named Mr. Mateika. Around the time I was in his class or maybe grade 6 or 7, I actually can’t really recall, he was the mastermind behind not just the school’s first computer lab but the entire school division’s first computer lab.

Santa brunch, I’m in the middle, on my right is my cousin and on my left my older sister Corinne

These large, odd looking, green screened, floppy disk driven PC’s filled the perimeter of that classroom. I remember he was very excited about it and I really didn’t understand why.

He even had a local television station come from a larger town about 2 hours away to do a segment on it for the 5 o’clock news, it was a big big deal in the mid-80’s.

At first all I can recall is playing King’s Quest on them but soon we were learning to type and ASDF became permanently imprinted on my brain.

We were taught to type by feel of the keys and not allowed to look at our hands. I remember being frustrated at first but with practice, and being forced to sit at a computer practicing over my lunch break, it came. The result was that I became very fast at typing.

I loved sitting there working on these computers and I took a number of computer classes in high school. Spreadsheets were my fave. Making these formulas that could just magically compute things for you, it was so cool.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have pursued it further and made a career out of it.

  1. I was just a little earlier and learned to type the same way, on a typewriter, not looking at the keys. Thankfully, I’m a super fast typer too, but being born a little later might have been much better, since I am terrible with spreadsheets. I probably should be in an Excel course right now. 🙂

      1. Sounds like a well-rounded human. Thank you for sharing, reminding me of writing DOS code in middle school. We made a rudimentary bird fly across the screen. Exciting!

    1. I remember learning with the left hand first and then yeah, adding the right hand and the JKL; and it was like wow this is getting complicated 😂

      1. Man, I’m so old I learned on a MANUAL typewriter. I cheated on the numbers for years, for some reason. Now who knows how fast I type? Or more like, how fast I typo.

  3. Kings Quest! I had the entire boxed set and KQI was laughably goofy… by the time they got to 7 or 8 (?) it was much better. My 5 yo daughter and I painstakingly made our way through them… fun 😎

  4. I use excel a lot. It’s such an interesting incredible tool, but I’ve lost the ability to do math in my head!

    1. Well if it’s any consolation I don’t use Excel, like ever, and I have gotten to the point where I’m double checking like 45-12=33 on my calculator 😅

  5. Good Lord, floppy discs!!! I wonder how many of those you’d need to match what a small thumb drive can hold today?
