Pearls of (pretend?) wisdom

Daily writing prompt
What book could you read over and over again?

Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty, could and have read over and over. I think five-ish times, purchased two copies.

For me personally, so many pearls in it. So many aha moments.

My daughter Bella-Lena called him a farce. Providing lip service just to milk a cash cow. I don’t want to believe it.

I’ve read The Diary of Anne Frank several times as well, as a kid. The first time I read it, I was maybe ten years old. It made no sense to me. I didn’t understand and couldn’t comprehend why they had to live and hide like that.

  1. Yeah, probably a lot of books I read when younger I didn’t understand. I’ve read quite a few books where it seemed serendipitous to be reading that particular book at that particular time, but I think this phenomena is quite common!

    1. Hmmm…wonder which serendipitous book you’d be reading right now…something about torture no doubt 😂

  2. The thing about Jay Shetty is, whatever his true origin story, you were helped by his book. There’s something for you there. However he actually learned what he was able to articulate in a way that touched you, the message came through.

We’re exiting an era where so many people have been dazzled by the idea of people who trained in India or Nepal or etc. and gained wisdom to bring back to the western world. It’s okay, we just can’t put anyone on the pedestal that capitalism wants us to. He likely had coaching to make his story into something more compelling in order to breakthrough, which most successful people do.

The other night I put on a YouTube video of Eckhart Tolle, whose books I read and got a lot from at the time. This video was more focused on how to be ‘successful’ and honestly, I wonder if it was even him. Maybe it was an AI dupe. If not, its so depressing that his messages, which tap into compassion and detachment usually, would be skewed that way. One asks themselves if it was all a shtick. Either way, I’ll forever cherish the actual previous teachings, on the pain body, especially.

Sorry for (as Laura sometimes says) the novel. 😀

    2. Yep you’re right Stephanie, even if he’s not an actual monk, doesn’t matter to me.
The Eckhart Tolle thing wow, I can’t imagine him wanting to discuss such a topic lol, seems like the antithesis (is that the right word?) of all he stood for, I also read two of his books.

      1. The fact that I couldn’t tell whether it was him or not is very creepy too!

    1. Do Michele! And let me know what you think! I read it about 4-5 years ago and it was the very first book I ever picked up of that genre…i had never ever before examined my thoughts and the concept that i could be in charge of them was shocking lol
