Sitting duck

Daily writing prompt
What do you think gets better with age?

Men get better looking with age, that’s for sure.

I read this meme that said something like, ‘as I get older am I going to think older men are good looking too, like am I going to see a 70 year old man at some point and think wow he’s so hot?’, ummm…yep.

That’s what actually happens.

On another note, it’s my Dad’s bday today. Ask him if life gets better as you age and he’ll say absolutely not. He’s a bit miserable if I’m being honest.

Five or six years ago a heart attack slowed him right down. To be fair, he probably had several but only one that he went to the hospital for. Even then he left AMA (against medical advice) two or three times.

My Mom called me that day, I recall it very clearly, she said Carla I’m so embarrassed, I used to work here as a nurse and now he won’t stay and do what the doctor wants, he keeps leaving and then I bring him back and he leaves again.

I talked on the phone to him and said Dad, like smarten up! You’re NOT SMARTER THAN THE DOCTOR. And yes, I was raising my voice at him. He said the doctor was a rude little prick. I said well too bad, they don’t all have great personalities but he still knows more about what’s best for you right now.

So after more chest pain, Mom took him back into the hospital a third time, around 4 am. They admitted him and he was sent by ambulance to Winnipeg for stents. The doctor told him, you’ve had a heart attack. His reply, oh I’ve felt that pain before, it’s nothing.

He wasn’t expecting to be slowed down by the damage to his heart muscle but he was. Severely. And this is where the yucky side of aging comes into play. I think the only identification he felt throughout his life was as a farmer. Sure, he was a husband and a dad, but he prided himself on being a farmer.

He made a living from farming. And unlike many other men his age and from the same area, he hadn’t been handed down a farm. He bought it himself and paid for it himself. Worked it himself.

But his heart let him down. He was left too weak and out of breath to climb up into the tractors and trucks. Something I’m sure he never planned for or even imagined would happen to him.

He has a saying about aging which I won’t repeat here because it’s not very nice.

I hope he has a Happy Birthday in any case. Cheers to 77!

Thanks for the birthday wishes, I didn’t (and won’t) tell him I semi-dedicated this post to him but I did make a post on FB for him cause he acts like he doesn’t like the attention but in reality eats it right up πŸ˜‚

  2. Happy Birthday to your dad, CJ. Aging is frustrating when we are physically limited yet have many things we want to do. I agree with you that older men are handsome. My husband was 20 years older than me, and I always thought he was distinguished.

Yessss…it’s great for some, not so much for others and it really all depends on health, physical and mental. 🀨

  5. Happy birthday to your hardworking dad! πŸŽ‰

Not being able to do what you normally do must be frustrating, among other things. My dad had to retire early due to health reasons. Life is fragile.

      1. You’re welcome. I know what it’s like from having a serious injury years ago, but a permanent adjustment is an entirely different obstacle. Life. πŸ™„
