Sick

From my calendiary (I named it that) on January 11, 1991, I had just turned 14 not even a month prior:

School was sick as usual. They still haven’t settled the nurses’ strike. The 15th is the deadline for Iraq to pull out of Kuwait. If they don’t there will be a war. USA is helping Kuwait.

I don’t even know if I had my facts straight but it cracks me up that these kinds of events were on my mind. You can tell we watched a lot of news growing up.

The nurses’ strike was near and dear because my Mom was a nurse and had to be on strike and put in her time picketing on some really cold January days. I believe that’s the last time nurses in Manitoba have been on strike.

The word “sick” wasn’t used then like it is now. My kids say something is sick if it’s really cool. In 1991 I meant sick as in yucky, awful.

  1. Reading this reminds me, once again, how much I feel bad for not keeping a diary of my school days.

  3. You were only 14 in ‘91! Makes me feel old. I was 25. I also remember being very concerned about that invasion of Kuwait.

    1. And a week later i wrote “the war is still on” lol, like as if it would’ve started and ended within a week 🤭

  4. I have very few diary entries from that era. My Mum kept a less detailed calendiary — it had temperature, and maybe a couple events on it. Not sure if I kept an example. My Grandma, her mum, had journals for decades though that I do have, but they start in her old age.

    1. That’s really cool to have your Gramma’s journals!
It’s interesting to think that maybe someday when i’m gone, someone will be reading mine lol.
I wish i had done more journaling when i was a kid, my calendiaries are just a few years in the early 90’s

      1. 11 years ago a relative objected to me transcribing the 30 year old journal entries, so I stopped posting them. Here’s 40 years ago today, in Toronto:

      2. Very cool! “The mush” lol
It’s too bad you were stopped from transcribing them! This is part of the reason i don’t want family on my blog lol, i don’t want to need permission to tell the stories i tell.
