Sick

From my calendiary (I named it that) on January 11, 1991, I had just turned 14 not even a month prior:

School was sick as usual. They still haven’t settled the nurses’ strike. The 15th is the deadline for Iraq to pull out of Kuwait. If they don’t there will be a war. USA is helping Kuwait.

I don’t even know if I had my facts straight but it cracks me up that these kinds of events were on my mind. You can tell we watched a lot of news growing up.

The nurses’ strike was near and dear because my Mom was a nurse and had to be on strike and put in her time picketing on some really cold January days. I believe that’s the last time nurses in Manitoba have been on strike.

The word “sick” wasn’t used then like it is now. My kids say something is sick if it’s really cool. In 1991 I meant sick as in yucky, awful.
