As a kid, winter was my favourite season. My birthday falls on the winter solstice, four days before Christmas so December was exciting for both of those reasons. Kids view life differently than adults do and so the snow, the icy winds that blew across the fields, the drifts left behind in our driveway and the plunging temperatures just added to the ambience that was winter.
It’s funny how kids don’t seem to mind the cold weather, it’s like they are somehow immune to it. But as you get older the frigid temps are a major source of begrudging complaints. I’m not sure when I turned against the winter but for a long time now, I’ve been a lover of summer.
Humans love to love what they can’t have, and can’t get enough of. So because of the geographic location in which I live, our summers are insanely short. Blink and it’s gone. Most likely that’s why I can’t get enough.
Although I enjoy seeing the seasons change, and I’m grateful to live in a place where we do experience all four seasons, it would be preferential if they could all grace us with their glory for equal amounts of time.
As an aside, I try to convince myself that I’m still young enough to be in the summer of my life as well. I might realistically be in the autumn of my life but denial is my best friend some days.
