There are actually quite a few foods that remind me of being a kid. Sometimes I make these foods myself and other times a photo or even a cooking show reminds me. Chocolate chip cookies are probably top of the list. I was obsessed with my mom’s chocolate chip cookies and I learned to make them as soon as she would let me. The purpose behind learning to make them was so that I would be able to eat them more often.
I’ve talked before about my sugar addiction as a child and these damn cookies fueled it. When my mom or I baked them, I would sneak and eat them for breakfast. I clearly recall when I was around ten or eleven years old, my dad would make porridge or cream of wheat for my sisters and I for breakfast in the winter but I refused to eat it and instead I’d pour a black coffee with about four teaspoons of sugar and grab a couple of chocolate chip cookies to go with it.
I still have that recipe memorized and if only I wasn’t off sugar right now, I might bake some. Actually maybe I will for the kids. Only problem is my willpower around that raw cookie dough lol. I kind of go crazy, can’t stop eating it. Let’s hope I’ve matured enough to be able to handle the temptation.
One of the other things I fondly recall were my gramma’s homemade buns. She would make these huge batches of buns, homemade noodles etc and oh my god they were amazing! I could easily eat three in a sitting, slathered with peanut butter and some homemade jam. It’s a good thing I had a good metabolism I tell ya.
A couple of other foods that lend themselves to my childhood are perogies and beet leaf buns. And then lastly, scrambled eggs cooked in the microwave. My favourite way to make scrambled eggs. My other gramma taught me that. It might sound icky but if you’re a fan of light fluffy eggs versus stuck to the bottom of the pan eggs, then microwave cooked is for you. The method is the same, scramble the eggs, add a bit of milk, also add some butter, salt and pepper and start cooking. The trick is taking them out often and stirring them. The best. I eat them almost daily and Sid loves them too.
I’ll go cook some right now. Happy National Indigenous People’s Day everyone! I’ll post a pic of Sid wearing his ribbon shirt, taking in the events last year.
Oh and happy summer soltice. I’m so sad the days get shorter from here on out. Today the sunrose at 4:46 am and it will set at 10:20 pm.
