Old and crotchety

Daily writing prompt
What would you change about modern society?

I agree that technology has taken over and we are way too attached to our phones, I am guilty of this myself. But I’ve always believed “everything in moderation” and I really dislike the thought of stopping progress. So there must be a way to have both. Personalization/human contact and a happy and positive existence, while enjoying the benefits that technology brings.

I don’t want robots serving my meal in a restaurant or replacing the jobs of actual humans at Walmart. But I do enjoy being able to order anything, from anywhere, with a swipe of a finger on my phone. I really don’t know how we find that happy medium.

Personally, my only issues with society are more people centred.

The waste and expense that goes into planning a wedding annoys me to no end. Thousands and more likely, tens of thousands of dollars go into planning a modern wedding these days. It’s not enough to spend two or three months wages on a dress, then more on the venue, the caterer and the photos, people now buy gifts for each person in the bridal party to bribe them into standing with them for their big day.

I’m probably going to come off sounding so old and crotchety but in my day when you made the mistake of getting married and planning a wedding, you simply called up a few of your closest friends and said hey will you be in my wedding party. Now you have to schmooze them with a box of trinkets just to get them to say yes. It’s insane.

If you want to enter into a marriage contract, how about spending all of that time and money actually getting to really know the person you say you want to spend eternity with. Instead of taking two years to plan the events that take place all in one day and that are mostly for show and to keep up with the jones’, spend that two years at home with your would-be partner doing renos, paying bills and visiting each other’s families.

Same thing goes for pregnancy hooplah. I mean yes, you have a right to be excited that you’re having a baby but how much of the baby shower and gender reveal phony baloney is just for show? Like who dreamed up a gender reveal party, it’s beyond ridiculous if you ask me. You are bringing a human into this world. Make sure you know what you’re doing, make sure you know yourself, and your partner. It’s not a puppy.

It’s a long road and a hell of a lot of work to make sure that baby grows up to be a good human. That’s where the focus should be. Not on oooh is it a boy or girl. The gender reveal party should be the whole family and all the friends reading books on how hard it is with a newborn, parenting techniques and how not to raise a Charles Manson.

Wow do I sound bitter. Could be just the mood I’m in but I kind of stand by it.

The other thing I’d like, in a perfect world, is a far right lane where you can drive slowly and text at the same time. I do not support distracted driving whatsoever but I do believe I could safely drive say, twenty to thirty kilometres an hour and send some important texts at the same time. It’s not too much to ask for is it?

  1. Oh yeah, thank you. This absolutely drives me nuts too. The amount of money spent on wedding stuff and the like is ridiculous. Enough to drive someone into debt!

    1. It actually surprises me how anti-wedding I am, and part of it is because my own wedding was a waste…we ended up divorced but I’m not bitter, I just feel like weddings are old fashioned or outdated. You don’t need a piece of paper and especially all the fuss and waste of money to commit to someone. I am shacked up, happily and will never get married again.

I had to stop and laugh out loud at this line tucked in there… mistake of getting married… lolollol This is a fabulous rant. 🙂 You're right that it's too much hoopla, a lot of the time, distracting from the most important things. One year, I attended 13 weddings. Within five years, all but one of those couples was not together. I'd gone into debt for gifts and clothes and travel, and it was just, a lot. I learned, though.

    1. Maybe part of sending out the invites is a contract agreeing to pay back all the expenses for each guest who attends if the marriage goes south 😳🫣

      1. haha, can you imagine all the lawsuits. I can only imagine now, when people make their weddings into lucrative social media productions.
