This is not something I would ever think to keep track of. And if I did spend an exorbitant amount in a restaurant, I would try to quickly forget it.
Most likely, the most expensive food bill while dining out, involved a meal with the kids. It’s rare now that I would sit down in a restaurant with all four of them together but it has occurred over the last couple of years and I’m sure it was pricey.
I’ve never been the type to say “only water with your meals kids”, as I’ve heard other parents do. When the older kids were small, if we went to Boston Pizza for supper they loved getting those fancy kid drinks, like Grape Pop Rocks. I couldn’t say no. These days it’s Sid getting the non-alcoholic cocktail served with a tuft of cotton candy stuck on the top of the straw. It’s adorable. And YOLO right?
Some parents don’t allow their kids to order pop or chocolate milk or whatever because they say they fill up on it before their meal comes out, or maybe they don’t want them having all that sugar. To me, dining out should be something of an event, always, even if it’s just Boston Pizza. Once my older kids got into their teen years, they were all about the appetizers too. So yeah, just a regular old supper meal in a restaurant with the kids was and is expensive.
Myself, I’ve always loved eating out, even as a kid and it rarely happened then. I know they say cooking your own food is much better for you but if I had my choice I’d eat out probably five nights a week. We don’t, except maybe when Clint is out of town, then I go on strike from cooking and the kids and I do eat out more often.
The way food prices are these days though, it’s a toss up as to do I want to spend pretty much the same amount of money to go to the store and buy, prepare and then do the cleanup of a meal, when I could just order out and have it delivered. Okay it will be less healthy most likely, but it will make me happy. 🙂
As I write this though, I am realizing I missed out on something in my younger years, pre-marriage and kids. Eating out with friends. When I first read the prompt, I thought about people I see on social media, eating at these amazing places, especially in summer, on outdoor patios. Delightful appys and fancy and literally intoxicating beverages. Instagram worthy main courses. A big group of friends who are laughing, eating and drinking all through the evening and into the night. I don’t think I’ve ever done that! It makes me want to cry lol. Too late now. I’ll have to encourage my kids to do this!
