One road

Daily writing prompt
Create an emergency preparedness plan.

This reminds me of the kids coming home from school with their little fire safety plans they do in class, where they draw the layout of the house and mark the exits.

I’m not really a superstitious person but I do think that when you talk about these things, is sometimes when they happen.

We don’t have floods, tornados, earthquakes, landslides, hurricanes etc where I live. They just don’t occur here. I know you can never say never, especially in the midst of climate change but these are things I’ve never prepared for.

Fire is a different story, be it a house fire or a forest fire. House fires can happen to anyone and sometimes in the winter when it’s -40 Celsius I think about people who wake up to their house on fire and I can’t even imagine how scary it would be. Especially because when you run outside so that you don’t die in the fire, you will die from the cold very quickly too. So I’m a bit paranoid about that.

I don’t let my daughter burn candles in her bedroom because I know even though she promises she’ll blow them out, chances are she will fall asleep before that happens.

The threat of forest fires is on my mind sometimes as we live in the boreal forest. There are forest fires around the area as we speak but nothing close enough to warrant any panic or even planning.

There’s one road in and one road out, as in, one road.

    1. 99% of the time yes! But two days ago there actually was an air quality advisory due to the forest fire smoke further north.

      1. That’s the one hesitation I have about moving west into a more foresty place. Here my son has skin allergies, but there, there would be more smoke events. Hm.

  2. For a short time I lived in Northern California at the end of the only road in or out, there was always a bit of panic in my brain whenever there was the faintest hue of smoke in the air. But for the old timers it was business as usual.

  4. Hate when smoke envelops the sky. I’m not a fan of forest fires. We get too many of them around here.

    1. Yes, depending on the severity, it can almost look apocalyptic!
