The Becky to my Darlene

Daily writing prompt
What TV shows did you watch as a kid?

We were not a Saturday morning cartoons type of household. In fact our TV was never on if it was a weekend morning. I’m not sure why actually.

If I said my Dad didn’t want us sitting around watching TV in the mornings, I’d probably be correct yet that sounds pretty old school and harsh. I think if I’d insisted on watching some show on a Saturday morning, he wouldn’t have had a problem with it yet for some reason I guess I didn’t.

The shows that stand out to me were the more prime time ones. Family Ties and The Cosby Show were my two absolute faves. I feel like I grew up in their households. Alex P Keaton AKA Michael J Fox was everything.

Family Ties reruns played on a Christian TV station up until about eight years ago and so I recorded as many episodes as I could and made my kids watch them. Disappointingly, they didn’t have the same effect on my kids as they did on me.

I remember the day of the series finale. How sad I felt. We were planting our million rows of potatoes that evening but I skipped out for a bit to sit and watch the very last episode of Family Ties.

The Cosby Show was a big warm hug for me as well. I’m not going to mention the real life happenings of Bill Cosby that came to light years later as it still is too shocking to believe.

It’s crazy how you can think someone is a nice person yet all the while they’ve been tricking you into believing they are someone else.

Oops I mentioned it.

Anyway, I loved living in and growing up in the Cosby household.

Later I really enjoyed Roseanne, as my whole family did I think. I could really relate to Darlene and my older sister was Becky. Our personalities were so similar to theirs.

It’s funny to imagine that back then we all watched one TV together in the evenings. That never happens now in my household. If everyone is in the living room and the TV is on, guaranteed the kids, or Clint or I, are on our phones. We’re never all engaged to what’s on TV. I just realized that.

  2. When I was a boy I wanted my mom to adopt Michael J. Fox for an older brother and I was convinced she could.
