Keeping it heavy

Daily writing prompt
Which topics would you like to be more informed about?

Not to start off super boring but, American politics is something I wish I had a better handle on. Only because we are neighbours and when I hear something on the news, I’d like to have a clue what they are talking about. I don’t know the senate from the congress from the supreme court. And I really don’t watch the news much these days.

But at the same time I don’t want to delve too deep, I just would like to know the basics. I could know if I truly wanted, I have the world wide web in my hands 24/7. So I guess I’m just being lazy.

Another dull-ish topic is around the legal system. I don’t understand why people who commit serious crimes like murder, rape and child molestation serve such short sentences. Why isn’t it an automatic twenty-five year minimum sentence? I really don’t understand that. Especially the sexual offences against a child. It’s not right that people do that to kids and then in a few years are out of jail. To me, that is the most serious offence.

How did the person making up these rules justify that in their head? Three to five years in jail after you’ve violated an innocent child and possibly ruined their life forever?

My daughter’s friend was violated last year by her step-dad, the slimy little creepy perverted bastard. Her dad told my son that he thinks he’ll get a three year sentence. THREE YEARS!!!

He spent longer than that grooming her to try and gain her trust and really be favoured by her. Disgusting.

Okay I need to change the subject as I feel my blood beginning to boil in my body.

Another thing I’d like to know more about is the technical side of cooking. The sauces, the flavour profiles of things. How do you make a really tasty meal? I know it has something to do with including conflicting flavours, I just don’t know the ins and outs of it all.

Again, I could google it if I really wanted. Yet I don’t seem to make the time for it. We’re so fortunate that we don’t have to go to the library and look in an outdated encyclopedia everytime we want to know something. My family didn’t own a set of encyclopedias. The salesmen came to the door, they tried, but it wasn’t in our budget I guess.

  1. As an American, I can tell you that you really don’t want to know more about American politics, at least not these days. Having watched my country slide ever deeper into the muck for the past 75 years, I now spend most of my time trying not to think about politics.

I have to agree with the earlier comment. In 2024 when it comes to politics here in the US ignorance is kind of bliss LOL

  4. i can tell you from my own experiences that your experience with your daughter’s friend is not at all uncommon. the reason is that attorneys have all types of legal loopholes that they can use in order to advocate for their clients – for better or for worse. It really depends on the money you have to spend and the degree to which you speak to authorities in the first stages of your confrontation with them. attorneys for highly privileged (read: wealthy) clients always stress that under no circumstances should they speak to police during the initial encounter. this helps keep things even. let the police officer get mad and/or threaten you – just remain quiet until your lawyer gets there.

as for politics, and this goes the world over, i’ve always made it a point to listen to both sides. On twitter, I am subscribed to both President Biden/VP Harris and Donald Trump/JD Vance. Additionally, for Canada I’m also subscribed to Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilevre. then I have political pundits/talking heads on both sides that are more analytical in their responses instead of using volatile language. However, what I don’t do anymore is read news sources – I explicitly stay away from them. The problem with news now is that it isn’t news anymore, rather it’s become op/ed mouthpieces for political parties. Journalism, as a science, is not as fact checked as it was before (and even back then, things were a little dubious). That’s why you have more people now who have a bias that are doing the reporting. I choose to stay as close to the sources as possible by looking for news in the U.S. Senate/House of Representatives and the Canadian Parliament – then I just make mental check notes from there. I know lawyers are paid to fight and argue but why would they defend a pedophile? So sick.
