Face for radio

Daily writing prompt
What alternative career paths have you considered or are interested in?

Pretty sure I’ve said this several times, my big mistake in life was choosing the wrong career. (Well one of my many big mistakes.)

The path I should have gone down was to be a journalist, a reporter and ultimately I wanted to be that face behind the news desk on the six o’clock news.

English had always been my forte, since Grade One, and I always loved writing and words. But in my final year of high school, my best friend’s mom said she thought taking journalism in college was a silly idea and for some reason I listened to her.

Eventually I became a nurse, which was okay I guess. Not something I felt super passionate about however. I did that for twenty-four years.

At some point I started writing again, in a journal. Then I worked up the courage to write actual stories about people. Then I got the nerve to send them to the newspaper. Then I worked for the newspaper on a part-time basis. It was the best job ever.

I’m currently working as a College Instructor, although not a formally trained teacher but someday I hope to be. That’s my next career move, my Bachelor of Education.

It’s not too late for that. It is however too late to sign up for broadcasting/journalism as this face is now for radio.

  1. from reading your posts, you have an immense writing gift. while being at the desk of an evening broadcast may not be feasible, I have followed the rise in citizen journalism and think you can do something similar. additionally, with a good webcam (even a basic canon dslr with 28mm or 35mm lens equivalents), basic lighting and background arrangement, i can see a YouTube channel for you the way a Joe Rogan or some other famous YouTube person reports news or talks about stuff.

ever since i saw a blogger do a podcast here, I’ve been thinking of doing audio files myself or even exploring more media options outside of just writing out a post. it seems exciting and rewarding.

I think the sky’s the limit for you because of your writing skills. id love to see you hash out something for maybe a year or two on a YouTube or Spotify channel because I think a small spark like that could lead to bigger things. Mike

    1. Thanks so much for saying that Mike…just not sure about deviating from writing though as I am not very techy lol…for some reason, personally, I prefer reading things to watching or listening…not sure if that makes me stubborn or just old school or what…but these ideas you’ve given me are definitely food for thought!

  2. I was in print journalism. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t very lucrative. As a single parent, I wrote day and night.

    1. It’s too bad it’s not more lucrative isn’t it?! I only did it “on the side” as I was working fulltime plus ran a business on the side too but it sure was fun and I learned so much about so many things!

  3. Sadly, media (radio, TV and newspapers) doesn’t really pay well. The stability is not that great either. I could see you doing it, though. Teaching? Well, it doesn’t pay that well either, but the satisfaction that most teachers get from their jobs is key. I’m pulling for you. I think you’d be a wonderful teacher!

  5. Sometimes I wish we could go back to pivotal moments in our lives and tell well-intentioned people politely thanks, I’ll take it from here. I sigh when I think of a few of those, lol, kinda 🫤
