No excuses

Daily writing prompt
What is your favorite form of physical exercise?

This is a tough question because my faves are all sort of a tie for first place. I love lifting weights and always have. I first joined a gym when I was seventeen and had moved into an apartment with my sister.

Right away I was hooked. Up ’til then I really hadn’t developed any muscles aside from those shoveling-grain-’til-you-drop-farm-girl kind of muscles. When I first signed up for that particular gym, the owner took me through each piece of equipment and showed me precisely how to use it, all the do’s and don’ts.

I liked seeing muscles developed on my skinny little arms and legs. I went faithfully most days for about two hours each session. I started buying Muscle and Fitness magazines as well because I was fascinated by, well, muscles.

No matter where I lived, I usually always maintained a gym pass, paying way more attention to weights than cardio. Cardio was never my thing.

Having that kind of commitment tends to wax and wane once you start a family however. The gym went out the back door when baby one came along and two years later baby two and then three years later baby three.

There were some years in there that I didn’t workout at all, the word exercise had been completely stripped from my vocabulary.

Eventually I got back into it, I joined a gym again and I started walking with a friend. I quickly became hooked on walking. I liked what it did for my legs and because I walked with my best friend at the time, it was also mentally therapeutic.

Walking has been my go-to and even once Sid came into our lives I was able to include him by putting him in the stroller and getting out for some exercise.

Right when my marriage ended, I took a yoga class. I loved it. I was hooked. It was strenuous yet relaxing, challenging but also soothing.

Yoga is right up there with walking and lifting weights and a perfect workout incorporates all three. A brisk walk outside preferably and then some weights/yoga afterwards.

I hope to accomplish this today, as it’s Saturday and I have no excuses.

  1. I would challenge you to an arm wrestling match, but I already know who would win.

  2. It’s awesome that you lift weights. You must have great arms. I do weights in the water. They aren’t heavy but the larger the foam the more resistance in the water. I like it.

  4. I love yoga so much and hope to get back to it one day. Maybe I like Pilates just as much or more, since there’s the sense of the machines helping to find the right amount to push. With yoga I would often hurt myself and have to stop for a while, then longer and longer. 🙂

    1. I found Pilates too “strenuous” lol and less relaxing.

      1. It may be hyper-mobility that causes me to hurt myself whenever I have to find my own limits, or at least that’s what the rheumatologist says. Do miss it though!
