My Marushka

Daily writing prompt
Describe a family member.

Great prompt however I think that I’ve previously written about almost everyone in my family. My Gramma, my parents, my older sister, my spouse, and most of my kids have each been discussed.

My step-daughter Sara is expecting baby number two soon and as she was leaving the other day I said, well I guess the next time I see you, you will have two kids not just one. She said yes, is it just as exciting the second time as it was with the first baby, like do you feel all those emotions just as strong?

To which I replied, yes absolutely, and when you know it’s your last, you feel everything even more intensely.

At least that was my experience with my last baby, (the last baby I gave birth to), Cordelia. Of course Sid is technically my last baby/child but I didn’t know at the time I would have child #4 and I assumed because I’d opted for a tubal ligation during my c-section with Cordelia that she would be my last baby.

When Cordelia was born I was over the moon. It was such a satisfying love-filled experience. I already had a girl and a boy and was so happy to undo the “millionaire family” as I don’t like it when things are perfect and match. She was so beautiful.

A little round head and face that to me resembled a rose bud, and for a second I contemplated changing the name we’d picked out to Rosebud, as it suited her so perfectly.

Cordelia Mary Higgins. We loved her so much and her big sister and brother were over the moon. That’s something you don’t even contemplate or realize until it happens.

Of course you’re going to love this baby and would kill for her but also your other babies fall in love with her. That’s the sweet spot.

As she grew, I realized how opposite she was of her older sister. She copied everything her brother did. She wanted to be a hockey player, no dance lessons for this kid. My little bull in a China shop.

Soon she will be eighteen. Now it’s her turn to be over the moon about someone little and that’s her little brother Sid. They are very close and he loves being with her, hanging out in her room, eating all the unhealthy treats and watching whatever he wants on YouTube.

My older daughter Bella-Lena and I are very alike, very in tune to each other yet somehow Cordelia and I are also very alike in all the ways Bella-Lena and I aren’t.

I’m so blessed.

  3. They’re all so cute. When I had my third child I thought I’d know everything. He’d either be like sister #1 or sister #2. Not so. As I’m sure you know. He was his own combination of characteristics.
