Sloppy ice breaker

Daily writing prompt
Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.

Every single day is a “National Day” of something and I keep this tab open and share it with my class each morning before we get started on actual work. It’s supposed to be a bit of an ice breaker and maybe a chance to chat or share some laughs but it’s usually only me doing the laughing. This group is a tough crowd.

Today, for example, is National Housewife Day and National Sandwich Day. You lucky little housewives!

The housewife or “trad” wife topic was brought up yesterday on Stephanie’s post, sorry Stephanie, I don’t know how to go back and copy your link to insert here. If you want to check it out, her blog is Singing Gecko. (I need to learn how to do that.)

But back to the housewife topic, I think it’s a dream, I mean only if you had kids of course. People say staying at home as a mom is the hardest job but I disagree. I’ve done both. In Canada, our maternity leave is 12-18 months and so I stayed home for year 3 times with each of my babies.

Of course it’s work. But actually going to work and getting 3 kids to daycare or school and WORKING all day then coming home and getting all the things accomplished that can’t be ignored, getting 3 kids bathed and put to bed is WAY MORE WORK. My 2 cents.

But yeah, Happy Housewife Day.

As far as new holidays, I’m not sure. Of course I was being selfish and thought hmmm there should be a holiday to celebrate moms. Oh wait, been done.

Generally speaking, holidays are usually about family, gathering, food, even when it was initially a religious reason to celebrate. I think we have enough of those.

I think it would be interesting to celebrate each year those people who have climbed out from the gutters and turned their life around. They should have a day. I find those stories fascinating.

People who were at one point homeless or nearly, who fought their demons and worked hard to become successful. And by successful I don’t mean earning millions or living in a high rise, I mean they have a roof over their heads and they are happy and thriving.

That deserves recognition.

  3. this “trad wife” phenomenon is very interesting and funny. like, i wonder if we are all so far gone in embarrassment for classic labels that we have to jazz up the concept of a stay at home wife/mother in name. then again, fashion is fashion in whatever sense.

i have a couple friend that have been married for 8 years and they more or less do the traditional husband/wife roles. there’s positives to it, for sure but they’ve been refreshingly honest in pointing out the drawbacks. i guess it’s true that every lifestyle has its tradeoffs. Mike

    1. Ughh I’d be so down for it, I’ve got aprons in every colour lol…the only negative for me is spending someone else’s money…not earning an income of my own…I’m not comfortable with that.

      1. yeah, i can definitely see how that would make anyone uncomfortable really. to date, I’ve only heard about people doing it but i can imagine it would take an upfront conversation about roles and expectations and such. raising kids is very very tough but to also have to balance a job on top of it, that’s next level.

  4. Wonderfully humane post! Such a long maternity leave is a fantastic dream. Policy really matters so much in whether people can have ‘it all’, or whether they have to choose drastic and limiting paths in life. Don’t worry about pinging me, haha.
