‘He enlisted in 1940 in Calgary and was stationed there for a couple of years. In 1942 he was sent to England and Scotland for more training. He was first stationed with the 8th Army 1st Division Ordinance. They set up a workshop behind the lines and supplied and repaired everything from guns to vehicles. Was at Mount Cassino, Italy, then Rome, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany before he was repatriated in 1945.’
This was my Mom’s words, recapping her Dad’s experience in World War II. His name was John Smith. He and my Gramma were already married before he left overseas and they did not see each other for 3 years.
He didn’t talk about serving his country, like ever. In fact if you had never been inside his bedroom and seen all the medals hung up on their velour backdrop, you wouldn’t have even known.
When he returned to Calgary, he and my Gramma bought a convenience store and ran that for years on Centre Street and raised two daughters.
