Leftovers & picky bits

Daily writing prompt
Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

Honestly, the three big holidays (Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas) are just replicas of each other, for the most part. I’m perfectly okay with that because it’s very often the only times during the year where I cook a turkey with all the fixings. And that’s my all time favourite meal, either roast turkey or chicken, doesn’t matter.

My Mom always makes a tomato aspic to go along with the big holiday meals and it’s one of my favourite little sides. I need to learn her recipe. I’m going to do that, for Christmas. Just decided.

Usually the beginning of December I start my Christmas baking. I love baking and my family loves eating it. I have a list of about ten different items that I bake and put in the freezer.

I like to keep things fairly traditional over the holidays. My Mom decided to make cannelloni one year for Christmas dinner and I’ve never recovered. We were all in shock. Like where’s the turkey and mashed potatoes Mom?!

We love eating beet leaf buns too with the holiday meals but up here, the beet leaves are hard to come by. My sister said she froze some for me from her garden but I haven’t gotten them yet.

I’d say the best part of the big holiday meal is eating leftovers for days! Leftovers and picky bits.

Your kids look happy! I’ve never heard of tomato aspic or cannelloni and had to look them up. 🧐 Very cool, I learn something new every day!

      1. yup! it was originally a way for us all to feel more full since we didn’t have alot of cash to get a full holiday meal. so it’s sort of like a nod back to the old days 😀

  3. Cannelloni for Christmas, what sacrilege! I suppose your mum was just trying to get something that everyone liked:-) Maybe it’s your secret Italian heritage coming through;-) My mum always does a full turkey, gets a full ham leg (sometimes more than one), and roasts a lamb leg and maybe beef, as well as all these other dishes and like 10 deserts or more. It’s just crazy, she ends up two fridges stacked with leftovers. I see you’ve sort of got her vibes!!
