School shmool

Daily writing prompt
What colleges have you attended?

I feel like this question comes off as slightly elitist. Not everybody went to college first off. And not everybody NEEDS to go to college.

Money can be a barrier. Mindset can be an even bigger barrier.

I learned how to be a nurse by attending a college but I learned way more by growing up on a farm and then by marrying the wrong man. Way more.

I now work for our local college as an Instructor and it’s the best job I’ve ever had, I will say that. I am back in school myself, taking an online six credit course called Teaching for Learning through a college in Winnipeg. When I’ve completed that I might start working towards my Bachelor of Education degree as my employer will pay for it.

But I didn’t grow up in one of those higher learning households. The pressure on us from my parents was more about “work” than learn.

Hopefully I’m not coming across as anti-education, that’s not my intention. I think college or university is a great avenue and I hope my kids pursue it (my older daughter Bella-Lena is currently in her second year of university), IF that is what will make them happy.

My son Taz is working his way towards being an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and that doesn’t require college, he is working as an apprentice and taking courses that are done from home.

Back to the prompt, it annoys me that WP assumes everyone has gone to college.

  2. I agree with everything you said except the “slightly” part: it’s a *totally* elitist question!

  3. Yeah, thought it was odd to have a prompt that excluded so many. I couldn’t get interested enough to answer, but I’ve been enjoying others’ answers. Totally agree re not everyone needs to pursue college. We need a wide range of paths that allow people to life rich and wonderful lives.

  4. Love your perspective. There was a huge push to send kids to University in the 2000’s. Now, the market is over saturated. I worked for years at a Starbucks with masters students. It’s bonkers. Trade schools and simply working one’s way up a ladder are often more reliable than a degree. Glad you shared your story – it’s encouraging
