I think that oftentimes, the people who would make really good leaders don’t even realize it and aren’t in leadership roles. They are the quiet, empathetic, intelligent people in the back of the room who are too humble to ever put themselves in a position of power.
Too often the “leaders” are people with large egos who feel their ideas are superior to others. I am currently enrolled in an online course from a college out of Winnipeg, (online meaning cameras on and live). There are two people in the class who never stop talking and monopolizing the time that we have.
It first came through two classes ago, particularly with this one lady who literally never stopped using the raise hand feature and putting in her two cents. In the class last Wednesday the Instructor said that she wanted to hear from everyone in the class and so she would call on particular students to answer questions or speak and would also use the wheel of names feature and spin the wheel to see who would speak next. This was obviously her solution to stop this one lady from continuously talking.
Unfortunately we had a second Chatty Cathy join the class that day and between the two Chatty Cathys, they ate up so much of the time.
What I don’t understand is these people’s lack of self awareness.
How do they not see that they are constantly monopolizing the conversations? How do they not realize? And then shut up. What makes them think that we (the rest of the class) want to hear their two cents on absolutely everything we discuss. It blows my mind.
Yet these two people would probably be front runners for “leaders” in the class. I wouldn’t let them lead my dog.
