No roads

Daily writing prompt
Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

The only attraction close by is Pisew Falls and I’ve been there a couple dozen times at least. It’s really the only place to take drive to, when you want to either go for a drive, or just get out of town for the afternoon.

May 11/24, at Paint Lake, skies are dull because of smoke blowing in from forest fires somewhere in Canada, yet here the ice is still not off the lake
This was the day, on Highway 6, you can see no green on the trees yet either

To try and put it into perspective, my city is smack dab in the middle of the bush. There’s one road in and it’s the same road out. The road does continue north for a little bit but then the road literally ends.

There are no backroads for cruising, really not many other places you can go besides just Highway Six. There’s nothing but bush everywhere.

There’s only one other road you can go down and it’s towards the east, it’s a gravel road and then eventually you’re on ice roads (in winter obviously) but it just leads to a couple of communities and really only people who live there travel on it. Sometimes it’s used for fishing but otherwise you wouldn’t have any business going there.

There is a huge tourist attraction to the northeast of us and that’s Churchill, on Hudson Bay. People travel there from all over the world to see polar bears and whales. From here you can’t drive there though, the no road thing again. You can take the train, it’s an overnight train and I think it takes about 8 hours. Or you can fly but even though it’s probably not much more than an hour’s flight from here, there aren’t any direct flights from here so you have to fly to Winnipeg (740 km south) and then fly north again.

Even though it’s highly popular, I have zilch interest in going there. Further north, no thanks. We are north enough, isolated enough, remote enough.

  1. Does look peaceful. 🕊️ Would be some effort, but seeing polar bears and whales sounds appealing! 🙋🏼‍♀️🐳 Happy weekending to you and yours!

  2. ‘Ice still not off the lake’? Is that because the smoke melts it? I thought you would be frozen solid up there by now!
