In an effort to ensure that Sid knows who he is and where he comes from, we are trying to instill some parts of his Indigenous culture into his life. The people from his community speak a language called Cree.
I don’t speak Cree and neither does Clint, so I picked up a small whiteboard to keep on the fridge and each week we pick a new word, write it on the whiteboard and practice saying it over and over. We also, of course, get him involved in saying it.
Cree is probably the second most spoken language where I live, behind English, so it’s not hard to find someone to help you get the pronunciation down pat.
Traditionally and historically, Indigenous men grew their hair long and wore it in a braid, as a symbol of strength or to honour their ancestors. I will never cut Sid’s hair. He can cut it later on if he wants but I would never.
