Years ago when I worked on the Psychiatric Unit, we had to take a two day course on CBT, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and to be honest it didn’t really resonate with me at the time.
But once I started delving into some personal growth books and reading bits and pieces online about how we can (sometimes) have some control over our thoughts, it started making sense.
My daughter Bella-Lena saw various counselors and therapists in her teen years. I believe, spurred by the breakup of her dad and I’s marriage, she was on shaky ground for quite a while. Anxiety, crippling depression and at times she developed some pretty bad tics as well.
I went with her to see one particular therapist and he asked her if she was aware of the concept of radical acceptance. I was not aware of radical acceptance and later googled it. It made so much sense to me and resonated immensely with how I feel and think as well.
To me, just reading about these types of concepts helps me with negative thoughts and feelings. I keep a Pinterest board called “Clear Your Mind” where I’ve gathered my most favourite quotes about how to stay on top of garbage thoughts.
Deep breathing, as in controlled breathing helps immensely too, as does meditation. And it’s cliche but going for a walk or doing some type of workout when you’re feeling crappy helps too.
