80’s fruit

List your top 5 favorite fruits

I was always a bit puzzled why most people were crazy over fruit and I wasn’t. I just realized.

Macintosh apples and oranges with seeds in them.

Those were the staple fruits in my house growing up. I don’t like Macintosh apples! They’re too soft and bruised so easily in my brown bag lunches when I was in school. I never (or rarely) ate the apple to be honest.

Then there were those big, hard to peel oranges that you had to pick the seeds out of. No, kids don’t like those. Why didn’t we have seedless oranges at least?

My Dad is not a picky guy but for some reason detested bananas and couldn’t even handle the smell so we rarely had bananas in the house.

I think in the summertime Mom would buy watermelon on occasion.

But this was the 80’s remember. Other fruits had just not been invented yet I guess. Only Macintosh apples and oranges with seeds existed.

I think in the early 90’s I was introduced to kiwis. Yeah they were okay. Not something I’d eat more than one of though.

Okay actually I did leave one fruit out. Raspberries. Everyone on a farm has bushes of raspberries. But I never really thought to eat as a snack per se. They were picked to make desserts sometimes but then we went hard on picking them to can them, as in, to make jam. So yeah, raspberries also existed back then.

  1. We always had bananas on the kitchen table when I was growing up and even today I eat an average of three bananas a day! 🍌

      1. Well, one on my breakfast cereal, one in an eggnog kind of concoction, and then one that I just peel and eat. 🤓

  5. I always wanted to be like Kramer from Seinfeld and be an expert on them and munch down on all types of fruit, but my laziness and the fact they are basically sugar has unfortunately stopped me.

Yeah lots of seedless fruits and different varieties are out now compared the standards we had back then. Seedless red grapes are like lollies (candies?!?) on a stem. And I now look for Bravo apples, red and sweet.

And nothing wrong with a bit of French nail action, very classy! Suits you nicely at the right time:-)

      1. Oh really, yeah I don’t like those, ha:-) Fuji or Pink Lady?

I’ve had ‘visiting the apple forests of Kazakhstan’ on my bucket list for awhile. I was watching a youtube video, and the apples are different shapes and colours and flavours on almost every tree. Other fruits grow wild there too, like apricots, cherries, plums, grapes, and walnuts. Very cool place!

  7. We always had fruit. My mom would usually buy whatever was on sale. Sometimes Granny Smith apples is what she bought. Yikes, so sour. But I liked fruit in general so I’d just grin and bear it.

  8. MacIntosh have been dead to me for years, those poor apples never saw noon at school in my A-Team lunch box, should have sent them as sauce.

Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for life!

    Great post.
