Are you a leader or a follower?
I’ve morphed into more of a leader over the years I think. As the years ticked by I came to the realization that it’s okay to speak up, to make demands and to advocate. But the trick is, there’s a time and a place.
I wrote about this at some point last year I believe, about being the dumbest person in the room. Especially in new situations. I feel like only a fool would assume a leadership role in a room full of people you’ve only just met. And I’ve met plenty of fools.
We have a retreat coming up in June for my job. I haven’t been to one before but apparently it involves the staff (in the Faculty of Health) getting together at a set location to discuss course material etc and some brainstorming to make improvements.
We’ll also spend some time getting to know each other personally and developing relationships, as we come together from four different towns basically.
Right off the hop, as we break out into our working groups someone will emerge as the leader and it ain’t gonna be me.
I will sit back and take it all in. I’ll pipe up when necessary and of course, when appropriate, provide comedic relief.
I can guarantee you that the person who does pipe up as the self-proclaimed leader, voicing their amazing ideas to show off how much they know, will have me rolling my eyes and wishing they’d shut up.
