First of all, I just want to say that Wasted Time by The Eagles is one of my all-time favourite songs. Imagine someone actually writing a song about how bad you are with love. Tragically romantic. To be honest, anyone writing a song about me in any context would be romantic, even if it was how psycho of a girlfriend I am. (I’m really not).
In my day-to-day life I think I’m pretty normal in saying that most of my wasted time is due to scrolling stupid crap. Facebook and Instagram I hate that I love you. I do have limits set for them and now that the wild fires have tamed down and I don’t have to worry about watching for the latest updates on which communities are being evacuated, I’ll stick to those time limits.
Other than social media, I don’t see other leisurely activities as wasting time. If I’m laying outside on a lawn chair, staring up at the leaves in the trees while Sid plays in the backyard, am I wasting time? I don’t think so.
I googled “how did people waste time in the 1950’s?” and the AI reply said that people watched tv, listened to the radio, played board games etc. So I think we’re doing okay.
I think for me, scrolling my phone has replaced watching tv. I really don’t watch much tv at all. The national news sometimes (CBC of course), the occasional re-run of Will and Grace or Chopped.
I won’t consider my time here as wasted. I need to write every day. I actually apologized to my journal this morning because it seems I rush through journaling to get here. It’s hard to find the right amount of time to do both.
