There was this phenomenon out in the country where I grew up, where every single household kept a radio on top of the fridge that played the only radio station that would come in, an AM country station out of Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
As the song lyric goes (was it an old Alabama song?), I was raised on country music.
I really didn’t know there were any other genres until I got older. We only had two channels so there was no MTV or anything of the sort.
In junior high I discovered rap music, thanks to DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. I fell in love with Roxette. Corey Hart and Alannah Myles (Canadian).
Among the different cliques in high school I admired the headbangers the most. These guys with the long, long hair that listened to Metallica, Ozzy Osborne and Megadeath. Of course I wanted to impress them so I started listening to it too. I still listen to Metallica to this day sometimes.
But I also liked the less harsh stuff like Aerosmith and Warrant. In between it was INXS or Little Texas, Bryan Adams or Gin Blossoms.
After I got married and had kids I was back to my hardcore country roots. Bella-Lena knew the words to every Toby Keith song by the time she was three because all that was on tv all day everyday was CMT.
Around 2007 I broke out of my country obsession once again and since then I’ve enjoyed a variety of music.
So it’s hard to put a finger on one genre of music because I’m a little bit Anne Murray-Alessia Cara-Kings of Leon-Sabrina Carpenter-George Strait-Alphaville-Nelly Furtado-Soul Asylum-Beastie Boys-Teddy Swims-Earl Thomas Conley-Dua Lipa-Doja Cat all rolled into one.
