Fingers crossed

Daily writing prompt
What time do you go to bed and wake up currently?

Last night I stayed up later than usual because I was listening for the impending thunderstorm that we were forecast to get. And we did. Not long after I went to bed, maybe 11:45 pm the claps of thunder started and I could see the flashes of lightning. Even with our jet engine fan going in the room, I could hear the rain.

We needed the rain, badly. Last evening it got wickedly smoky in town and visibility was probably half a kilometre, at best. The City sent out a registration form yesterday for everyone to complete, in case of evacuation. They want to know how many people have transportation versus how many will need transportation. Remember, we have only one road in/out of our city. The rest is bush.

The fire is north of town so as long as we don’t get north winds, should be fine, is what they’ve been saying. Tomorrow, however, we are getting north winds. I booked a hotel in Winnipeg, more out of panic than anything. It’s scary to think you will have no place to go. So many towns up here are evacuating for a second time and all are headed to Winnipeg or Brandon, there were posts on FB saying there were no hotel rooms left in Winnipeg so I was worried.

We could go southwest to Swan River where my parents and sisters are but the highway past Snow Lake (again, the only way to get there) is just south of a fire burning there and that town has also been evacuated, effective today. If the fire reached the highway there, it would be closed obviously and then the kids and I would be SOL.

Patiently waiting on an update from the City to let us know if we’re safe because the rain and nil winds today helped with the firefighting efforts OR if it’s time to pack and leave. This fire thing is getting sickening really.

Fingers crossed.

One of the fires north of town, the ski hill is about 10 km away, pic is from yesterday, before the rain
I’ve seen a few posts from people (jokingly) saying where’s winter, can it return please?!

  6. Stay safe!! I hope the rain helped and you don’t have to evacuate. I’ve had to evacuate before and it was not fun and very anxiety provoking.
