Creepy uncles

Daily writing prompt
What would you change about modern society?

In the pre-social media days, the only headlines we read were those from newspapers or magazines. Supposedly (and probably mostly) unbiased articles about people or places. But now, yikes, we’re all reporters, posting our likes and dislikes, our biased opinions on people, places or objects we’ve met, been to, experienced.

I fall as victim to it as the next person but I think what people forget is that there are two sides to every story.

Some cuckoo-in-the-badukoo person will post a photo and small caption that begs for attention or sympathy and, unfortunately, many people fall for it.

I think we’re too quick to react to what we see on social media and should take more time to properly learn what is actually going on.

As a whole, maybe we are spending too much time tethered to technology but there are so many good themes and ideas that have evolved as well.

I think there is more understanding overall. For example, I see that quote on FB often that says something about not making kids hug family members if they don’t want to, as in, forcing them to. This was really a thing back in the day.

Whoever decided that kids shouldn’t be forced to hug their creepy great uncle, just because he is a family member, is absolutely right.

It’s just a small example but there are so many ideas of understanding that I read and think, it’s about damn time!

As you all know, I have this entrepreneurial bone in my body and about 10 years ago I gave this a try, jewelry from fishing lures, kind of embarrassing now

  1. I agree that people need to use their brains, do their research, and not automatically believe everything they hear. Your jewelry is pretty.

  2. spot on with this CJ! “journalism” has become editorialism and it’s evident across all media platforms now .this is a no-no for people that just want the news. this is why I have a twitter/X account. Mike

    1. I reactivated mine as well because that’s where I used to get actual news online.

  3. So true. That’s one of the reasons I went back to newspapers. I don’t need to read unfinished articles or the same news regurgitated every hour all day long. Also, the only social media I still have is LinkedIn, and I’m thinking about closing that too. Social media was driving me crazy.

    1. Yeah you’re smart for that Edward! If it weren’t for being able to generate donations for my charity on FB, I’d give it up too!

  4. 1st of all – you should NOT be embarrassed about creating jewelry from fishing lures because I’d totally rock that necklace and those earrings. I think you should KEEP making them and create an ETSY account if you don’t have one already – to sell there.
    2. I absolutely agree with not making your kids hug anyone just because they’re “family”. It was big back in the days, and my mom used to tell me “Give so and so a hug” – even if I didn’t want to.
I am big on the fact that if my kids don’t know someone, don’t feel comfortable with them, or just say no – it is what it is and I’m not going to force it.
    Great post!

  5. Expression of Ideas should only be considered as a human right if that idea is progressive, innovative. If the idea harms the independence of others, then freedom of expression loses value…..

  8. Your title gave me the heebie-jeebies. Had a few of those!

Cute necklace that made me smile – my dad made custom fishing lures during retirement. 🎣

      1. haha πŸ‘πŸ» Also made me think about elementary school field trips to nursing homes. I complained once to one of the teachers about a grabby man and I was told to “be nice.” πŸ˜’
