The times they are a’changin

Daily writing prompt
What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

I used to be so embarrassed, as a kid and teenager, if my sisters or I had a friend over for supper and we had to say grace before we dug in.

The embarrassment was tenfold if it happened to be a boyfriend over to eat.

My parents still say grace before a meal and if we’re there, Dad will ask one of my kids to do it.

When I was growing up, I had only a couple of friends who went to church on a regular basis and had their own religion-based rules, but the majority did not.

Luckily for me, my best friend growing up had it even worse than I did. Her parents belonged to a religion that banned tv’s but lucky for her, her dad was a bit of a renegade and kept a tv hidden upstairs in one of the bedrooms.

The women all had to wear long skirts and their hair up in a bun. “Church” wasn’t in a church, but in one of the members homes, a different one hosted each time I believe.

Am I hungry or missing winter, or what? This was Cordelia’s 17th bday, 2024…all thanks to my own party planner, Bella-Lena
Yearbook photo from idk…Grade 5?
Little did I know then, in my late 30’s I’d end up with this redneck

  4. “Renegade” dad – that’s funny. My dad used to hide chocolate candy. 😆 Although I did not grow up in a religious household, we blessed our food. 🙏🏻

      1. You can change your mind anytime you want. 😊 At least you have family dinners – that seems a thing of the past, too.

  6. This brought back memories! I totally get the mealtime grace awkwardness — funny how those moments feel huge back then. Love how you’re reflecting on all of it with perspectivenow.
