Thrill of a lifetime

Daily writing prompt
Write about a random act of kindness you’ve done for someone.

All throughout my childhood my Dad had a crush on a blonde lady. And she wasn’t my Mom. I say this in jest of course, but it’s partly true.

Each night as she gave the weather out of the CTV Winnipeg news station (then CKY), he’d remark on how great she looked and what a good weather lady she was, how great a personality she had. If we were in the middle of eating when Sylvia came on to give the weather, we had to be quiet so he could hear.

I mean, it was partly because he was a farmer and his life and livelihood was ruled by the weather but also, he just really liked Sylvia Kuzyk.

So when my parents were going to Winnipeg with another couple for a concert, I decided that I would secretly try and get him to meet her.

I found her email on the website and sent her a message. I explained to her that she’d been part of our household for as long as I could remember and what a big fan my Dad was. Since she typically did part of the weather broadcast at different locations during events, I wondered if she might be near the venue where the concert was, and if so could he shake her hand.

She actually replied, which I was shocked at, and said she’d do me one better. She said my parents and the other couple they were going to be with, could come and meet her at the news station and she’d personally give them a tour.

Well holy moly. Giving my Dad that news was one of the most exciting moments of my life.

Not wanting to show up empty-handed, he asked Mom to pick up a box of chocolates to give her as a thank you and Mom joked how she never thought she’d see the day when she’d have to go out shopping for chocolates for Dad’s “girlfriend”.

It all turned out great. My parents got to meet her and shake her hand and Sylvia toured them around the news station and they got to meet the anchors as well. She was, according to Dad, as personable and friendly in real life as she was on the news.

Thrill of a lifetime. Well done, me.

  1. After reading this, I just had to look her up, and it turns out your dad’s girlfriend has a FB page dedicated to her called ‘Sylvia Kuzyk – Weather Goddess’

  5. For some weird reason weather girls are easy to fall in love with. Not that your dad ‘fell in love with’ her, but yeah, for some reason…

      1. Yes, I don’t know why, but there were a few I really liked, they just had nice personalities. Maybe it was practised, but they just seemed very natural and friendly, probably opposite of most pretty women you meet.

  6. That’s so cool! I wouldn’t have expected her to write Back to you so the fact she offered a tour was such a kind thing to do. I’m sure you made your dad’s year! What a beautiful memory to have!!!
