Wherever I am

Daily writing prompt
Tell us about a time when you felt out of place.

Which one? There’ve been oh so many times I felt out of place.

Elementary school when I was in neither of the cool kid groups, just the messenger who carried the notes back and forth between them.

High school, where it seemed like everyone else had stuff going on but me. They were busy with sports or band or the yearbook. Always on Monday laughing about their weekend antics. It felt like I watched from the outside.

Summer camp, where the kids all seemed to know each other AND the camp counselors. This bible camp was not a camp from my church or even the same denomination so I was definitely an outsider. I think I had begged my Mom to let me go there because the boy I’d had a mad crush on would be there. It was very lonely.

As I got older I found myself in fewer situations where I felt out of place. You get to be choosier as you age, as to where you go and who you will spend time with.

That’s not to say I always feel like I fit in well but even when I don’t, I’m okay with it. There are some “peopley” situations I’d rather not be a part of. I’m fine with being alone, eating alone. A glass of wine in a lounge alone.

Pretty comfy with wherever I am.

Ooooh 49 is creeping up fast!!

  1. yeah, thank goodness we could choose the people we want to be around…or even just ourselves. i understand the need to be social and all but nothing beats just loving your own company! Mike

  2. Some people are just wired to want to be around others, I can’t work them out. I wonder if they are bored with themselves and try to find something from other people. All different I suppose. Anyway, I’m with you CJ!

    1. Yeah Iโ€™m not really sure, could be. I think when I was younger I preferred more people around to being alone but itโ€™s changed a bit and I think that has to do with feeling more secure in my skin. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

  3. I have a hoodie that says, “Ew. People!”, and I wear it proudly. LMAO My daughter hates social situations, and she’ll say, “Can we get out of here? It’s too peopley”, I totally get it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I was alone a lot as a child, but I didn’t often feel alone. Is playing with model horses and barbies for hours, being alone? Didn’t seem to be. Perhaps it’s those situations like school where other people set the expectation that we learn to feel alone.

  6. Almost 49 is looking fabulous, beautiful you! I often felt like an outsider as a youngster and through the years. I’ve realized, feeling like an outsider is a superpower. ๐Ÿฆธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

  7. Great post. So relatable. Iโ€™m fine hanging out with myself at times. I think that comes with age and self acceptance.

  8. LOL. I think we all have multiple times when we felt out of place. And that’s a good thing. We aren’t all identical.

  9. Counting childhood isnโ€™t fair. I think everyone has a lot of those stories, so we should delete them from our memories. What do you think? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Adulthood is another story for the reason you gave. We can choose, and thatโ€™s a good thing.
