Gory thoughts on Halloween

Daily writing prompt
What historical event fascinates you the most?

Fascinated is probably not the right word, maybe more like ‘engrossed in’ would do it and I’m talking about World War 2 and the Holocaust.

I first learned about the Holocaust when I read The Diary of Anne Frank in about grade 5 or 6. It didn’t make sense to me at the time though. I could not understand why they were hiding and just how the logistics of it worked.

I love reading books and watching movies about WW2 or the holocaust. It still blows me away that all of it actually happened.

Just recently I watched the Ed Gein story on Netflix. There were references to the Witch of Buchenwald, Ilse Koch, who was married to a German officer who made lampshades and other furniture from the skin of Jewish people. It was so gory and disgusting. It’s unbelievable how those crimes were allowed to take place.

I realize that war crimes and genocide are still, unfortunately, taking place today. Again, it’s unbelievable to me. How people can treat people.

Peace & love

  1. There’s a fairly good book on the history of the Holocaust by Deborah Dwork titled simply Holocaust. It’s rather old. I bought it when it was a recommendation of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. But it gives a lot of background on the social conditions for Jewish people in Europe long before the Third Reich: forced to live in ghettos and etc. If it’s out of print, there’s probably something newer just as good. Happy Halloween and take care of yourself.

  2. it’s crazy isn’t it? I’ve done “research” on this stuff lol, and the thing that sticks out at me is how the social momentum becomes so big that it literally makes the people agree out of both fear and idealism. and when it gets to that point, everyone on the other side becomes fair game. it’s so scary!

    nice Halloween outfit 🙂 Mike

    1. Yeah I try and put myself in that whole monkey see, monkey do mentality and there’s no way on earth I would have gone along with it! No way. Maybe it’s ego talking but I’d like to think I’d be one of the good guys, risking my own life to hide or help Jewish people back then.

      1. good! you know, i was reading this excerpt from a general that tried to stop the communist takeover in russia. he was on the last evacuation ship out of the harbor as the communists took over and he said regretfully that he wishes everyone who opposed the communists were more unified and that they had identified and were honest about the existential nature of the threat sooner rather than waiting for it to become what it became before doing something about it.
hopefully we’ll never have to see this kind of stuff in ours or our kids’ lifetimes.

      2. Hindsight’s always 20/20 I guess…and at the start of something like that it would be easy to minimize what was starting to happen and think there’s no way it will get that bad.
        Yes, fingers crossed 🤞🏽

  3. Peace & love back atcha! I know what you mean about the Holocaust and it’s very difficult to think about. At what point will humans stop being inhumane?

  4. I am fascinated with them as well. There are some great fiction and non-fiction books about the Holocaust and WWII.

  5. Horrors of war and that time are completely different to the halloween horrors, but we somehow use the same word. Took me awhile to work out what was weird about your photo, then I realised your mascara had been applied like a cartoonist. Nice! Suits you ;-P

    1. I looked at “hippie makeup” ideas on Pinterest and i guess what i was going for was like the “music festival” hippie look, they’d use different colours of eyeliner and draw these “big eye” looks…my attempt was feeble lol

  7. I agree, CJ. In the US, there is a lot of that going on here. Masked man are throwing innocent people down to the ground and holding them in custody because they MIGHT be an immigrant. Terrifying.
