Not so simple

Daily writing prompt
Do you trust your instincts?

In general, absofrickinlutely not. Sometimes we are led astray by our own intuition. Because of anxiety, I read somewhere. Sometimes our thoughts lie to us, and, you know, thoughts can turn into beliefs.

So I can’t really rely on what’s going on in my head.

The exception seems to be, and I’m very thankful for this, when it comes to parenting. I have very good instincts when it comes to parenting. Not that it’s been a cake walk, my three older kids tested me like there was no tomorrow throughout the teen years.

But there were times when I said no to things, although it wasn’t often, and it turned out for the best.

  1. it is the worst feeling in the world to know your intuition failed you. i agree with your conclusion. this is why i will often rein in my intuition as much as possible so that i can let it run when the stakes are high relative to how much time I can actually spend processing the situation! great pic with Cordelia! 🙂 Mike

  2. In terms of telling if someone is lying to you, if you’ve ever watched that TV show ‘Traitors’, it shows that no-one really has any tuition at all in telling if someone is lying. There are studies too that show we have no clue if someone is lying.

But, having said that, you can sometimes tell what a 3yo will do before they do it, and *sometimes* you can tell what an adult will do before they do it.

      1. I’ve never heard that but I’m sure there’s some deep psychological reason for it. I presume it’s not a joke, but I know we tend to look up and one way when we’re thinking. And isn’t touching your nose supposed to mean that as well? Remember when they said during Covid, to not touch your nose? Hard for liars to live in those times ;-P

  4. In general I like to think that I always trust my gut. I feel like my self-preservation instinct is so strong that my body will tell me if something isn’t right.

Of course, this isn’t an absolute…
