Something so bad

What is something you really wanted as a child, that you finally got to do or buy for yourself as an adult? (Prompt courtesy: https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/en-ca/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts)

At the sake of every post being about how I grew up poor(ish), really the only item that stands out to me, are my Doc Martens.

I’ve written about it before, so here’s the Cliff notes on it: it was the mid to late 90’s, Doc Martens were cool, I wanted, couldn’t afford, so I got the (sort of) next best thing, the Sears brand Docs, they were fugly, cheap looking, kids in high school laughed at me, mean boys.

About 5 years ago I decided to avenge that humiliating moment in computer class and purchase an actual pair of Docs.

As it goes in life, the Docs didn’t really live up to the hype. I like them yes, but I think possibly I bought them a size or half size too big. I feel like my feet look like monstrosities in them. I wear a size 9 as it is, which is pretty big.

It’s funny how you think you want something so bad and then you get it and…

My real Docs, why didn’t they make me feel like I had the world?!

  1. man those are some mean kids. i hope karma visited them for that.

will you try buying a size or 1/2 size down?

i can’t tell you how many times it’s happened to me that I finally got whatever it was that I wanted and it turned out to be an absolute dud. Mike

    1. Yeah my thinking at the time was, for the job I was doing (homecare), I ordered them a size larger so I could wear thick socks in them n have no trouble getting them off n on 😬

  2. They look perfectly cool in that picture and you’ve matched the vibe with that black. I always thought you had a hidden Goth in there somewhere, maybe born from those dark Sears moments 😉 And… ribbon for shoelaces, wow, the extra yard! Now you can do some pirouettes in your docs during computer class, impress all those geeks finally! (just jokes all round here… sometimes I go overboard!)

    1. Lol Sears definitely had no goth moments 😂
The shoelaces came with them I swear!

      1. Women are generally a mystery… but women and goth… a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.

  3. Dear CJ, It’s amazing how finally getting something we longed for as kids can feel different from our expectations—your Doc Martens story really captures that bittersweet moment perfectly!

  4. They’re great boots on you, but I’m drawn to the tights, which I remember wearing back in highschool (?). I love stockings with little patterns and forgot how much until just this second!

    1. The tights are cute! Just a pain to wear though cause you’re forever cinching them back up! It’s exhausting lol

      1. I can totally see this, since I’ve become very particular with my socks at work!

  5. Those are pretty cool! Do you change the laces to match your outfit? Sears is a store that really needs to come back, not so much for the clothes, but for the home appliances and mechanical tools.

    1. Lol no those are the only laces for them.
Sears yes, or just any old department store! They’re mostly gone.

      1. You got me fooled then. I thought you were going for the cool factor and swapping them. Yes, department stores were awesome, especially around this time, with all the toys and decorations. We definitely need them back.

      2. Lol no, that would be too much work, swapping laces!
