It must’ve been 1992. We were arguing. My older sister and I. We were both teenagers in high school, she just one year older. We were complete opposites.
She was the classic type A personality and took school very seriously. My Mom looks back and laughs now. How from as early as grade 4 she would lock herself in her room each evening to study and do her homework.
Me, I was forever flying by the seat of my pants. Somehow doing well. My older sister was annoyed with my laissez faire attitude towards school and let it be known. She chastised me for not being a better student. She said if I didn’t start studying, doing homework and completing assignments I would not have a good life.
My ego-driven self explained to her that I did not need to study to get by, that maybe I didn’t have the marks she did in high school but when it came to real life after graduation, I would fare better than her.
To prove this, I threw out a challenge to her. In the year 2010, no matter where we were or what we were doing, we would meet to discuss who made more money.
2010 seemed very futuristic to teenage, early 90’s me.
Would we meet from some tropical location where each lived, on opposite sides of the earth via flying cars? Anything seemed possible for 2010.
Would I be rich and famous? Would I live far, far from the farm where I grew up and fly my parents to see me a couple of times a year?
Well here we are, 2026. I mean yeah, of course I ended up making more money than her in 2010 when, how could I not bring it up and point it out to her. But that’s not my point.
I also didn’t end up living anywhere tropical or luxurious, in fact I moved way up north.
How did it get to be 2026 though?
Time goes way too fast but here we are.
