What is an engrained habit you have to save money, that makes a negligible difference, but you do so anyways? (Prompt courtesy: https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/en-ca/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts)
I’m actually really excited to mull this one over and share my weird obsession. I think it’s because of the waste not/want not theory I was raised with, but I’m slightly obsessed with using items in containers until there’s not even a drop left.
Peanut butter, dish soap, laundry soap, shampoo, bodywash, lotion…you name it.
I will scrape those inside walls of the peanut butter jar with a don’t quit determination until there’s not even a quarter of a teaspoon left.
I’ve actually looked into inventing and patenting a contraption that would suction to shower walls and hold various sizes of bottles so that you could put shampoo/conditioner/bodywash bottles in it, upside down, and therefore every single last drop would be used and nothing wasted.
I never throw anything away without putting it upside down for at least a week so I can squeak every last drop out. This is why bottles with the pumps in them drive me crazy, it’s not so easy to stand them upside down and then if you find a way to prop them up upside down, and yes I do, when you take the cap off that messy pump comes with it too.
My favourite body lotion is the Hempz line but they usually come in pump style bottles and as we speak I have several laying on their sides in my bedroom and bathroom so that I can use up every bit of it before I toss it. I take the pump out and stick my fingers as far up inside as I can so I can remove all of it. Wasting none, or as little as possible.
I’m weirdly obsessed with this. But it would make me feel awful to just throw something out when I know it’s still good for a few more uses, sometimes more than a week.
With dish soap and also body wash, when it gets to the very bottom, I take the cap right off and add water to it and swish it around and squeeze it into the running water of my kitchen sink or bath tub.
Please tell me I’m not the only one?!
