You’ve got a friend in me

Social media gets a bad rap and for good reason sometimes. It can take up too much of our time. It really plays into the no-no of comparing our lives to others. It’s, at times, just absolute brain rot.

But there are some really good gems that I would not be aware of, if not for social media. Honestly.

For starters, some pages I follow about mental health and specifically anxiety, have showed me that I am not my thoughts. Also, the nuances of anxiety and that it’s so much more than a nervous feeling. The intrusive thoughts can be because of anxiety. Bottom line, anxiety fools you and lies to you.

Secondly, in terms of relationships, there are so many interesting facts on social media. For example, and I am so guilty of this, there’s a bump in the road, an argument, or just a disagreement and I’m ready to cut and run. That’s an actual thing. An actual response because of whatever I’ve previously been through. I did not know until I read on Instagram that other people experience this too. It’s probably impossible to be in a relationship where there is smooth sailing one hundred percent of the time. Impossible. But just because there are rough waves that doesn’t mean you need to abandon ship. I love Instagram for this.

I’ve read a multitude of quotes on Pinterest about radical acceptance and I share them with my kids. Okay, I had heard of radical acceptance outside of Pinterest but sometimes I need daily or weekly reminders to accept accept accept and not resist. I’m so happy Pinterest is there for me like this.

  2. I stopped using social media in 2015 until last year. There’s a big difference among certain types. Platforms like X or Blueskye are pretty cruel and petty when it comes to interactions. Substack was more like WordPress before it added it’s “notes” social media platform that runs parrell but by no means seperate from the actual “stacking of writing”, basically before I left SS it’s notes function became longform cruelty and the trolls and scammers and AI accounts have over-run the platform.

    1. WP was my first stop when I googled “blogs” and so this is where I’ve been, never tried substack. I find there’s getting to be plenty of AI crap on here too.

  3. I find WordPress so much better because the other aspect of SS was an underlying popularity contest. Felt like middle school.

  4. i don’t know if i’ll regret saying this but i figure social media amplified the behaviors that we all currently hate, but the factor of amplification for some behaviors became 10x simply because appearances play a key role in what our eyes look to. nevertheless, i also think that the good kind of social media will find a foothold if it hasn’t already and grow exponentially from that point. there’s only so much negative social media can do before it stays at a set level and just repeats what the algorithm wants. maybe? I hope so. i’m tired of alot of behaviors on instagram and twitter. Mike

    1. I find lately I’m seeing mostly ads on Instagram, like where are the posts of my friends and people I follow? It’s weird.

  5. I agree…social media does have some up sides. Mental health info is definitely one of them.

  6. If it wasn’t full of wonderful things, it wouldn’t be so hard to control I guess. 🙂

  7. Well, I think you know my opinion about social media, but if it helps people cope with the daily grind, then it’s all good. For anxiety, I use techniques I learned from reading Feeling Great by David D. Burns and refined during therapy. When I feel anxious, I go through my drill to reframe the thoughts triggering anxiety, and it usually reduces relatively quickly.

    1. Yeah i mean obviously social media or even just Pinterest (which i don’t really count as social media), could never equate “therapy” but i really appreciate it when the first thing that pops up is some kind of quote or conversation that i can really relate to and needed in that moment as a reminder 🤔
