What memory makes you laugh out loud every time you think of it?
My girls would say I’m being a pick me by saying this but I have one of those ‘sense of humours’ where I don’t find a lot of things haha funny. Or I don’t know, maybe everyone thinks that about themselves.
But I do know that while growing up and throughout school, the things other kids found hilarious, I did not. There was the odd kid in class who could truly make me laugh and in grade 8 when Jennifer and I became best friends, the congruency within our sense of humour(s) was obvious.
We laughed at the same things. Not sure how many times I made that statement to people when describing our friendship but it seemed to be a huge part of why we were friends. We didn’t laugh at the same things everyone else did yet WE always laughed together.
Even today as a grown up, if I’m with a group of other adults in any kind of setting, the things that crack them up, I don’t find funny at all. Sometimes I have to fake laugh just to feel involved. Clint laughs so hard about things that barely make me smile and I think to myself how is it THAT funny?
My kids have the same sense of humour, especially Bella-Lena. They all make me laugh in their own ways and often they ask me “Mom, who is the funniest kid?” Taz asked me that just yesterday. It’s like picking a favourite, to which I reply, you’re all funny.
But one moment stands out to me and it was when we were driving home from Winnipeg about six or seven years ago. Pre-Sid days. Just my three older kids and I. We were on hour five of the drive and so maybe exhaustion lent to my laughing fit.
It’s not something that anyone reading would find haha funny because it actually sounds pretty simple. A classmate of Bella-Lena’s was trying his hand at singing and had recorded some of it and she kept playing this particular verse over and over in my ear as I drove and she knew it was making me laugh and I couldn’t stop laughing.
I actually had to pull over on the side of the road because I was laughing so hard I physically couldn’t see.
The kids have made me laugh so hard that it brings me to tears several times and I love them for that. Because it’s rare that someone makes me actually laugh.
