What are three things you like about the religion you practice? If you are agnostic or atheist, what are three things you like about being either. Thank you Nico, for the prompt!
Not really sure I’d say I “practice” any religion. I no longer go to church and haven’t for years.
Do I believe in a god up there somewhere? Yes. I feel like you have to believe in something. And believing in nothing is a something.
I respect all religions and non-religions. I find the whole concept fascinating, even if I’m somewhat cynical about it at times.
Like I get the whole church concept thing, meeting together, coming together to practice your worship, having a leader up at the front…the minister, the pastor, the priest, whatever he or she is. The community of it.
But I don’t think that anyone who doesn’t do any of those things is any less “holy”.
The church I went to every single Sunday and was baptized in was the Grace Lutheran Church in the tiny little town of Birch River. It was cool. I found the Lutheran faith to be pretty cool.
I had friends and classmates who were part of a more strict religion where the women had to wear skirts and have long hair that had to be kept up in a bun. They weren’t allowed to have tv’s and their “church” was one of the congregation’s living room on a Sunday evening and it wasn’t called church it was called a “meeting”. They weren’t allowed to have sex before marriage or consume alcohol.
But that’s a tad extreme.
In the Lutheran faith, it’s okay for the pastor to be married, to be gay, to be a woman. It’s not frowned upon to drink alcohol or get a divorce or even an abortion.
I really appreciate that. Lutherans also don’t go knocking on doors to try and coerce other people to join their church or donate money.
I might have told this story before but when I was 17, I tried to sneak into the bar with my older sister and her friend. Well, I succeeded for a few minutes, but who was the first person I see, our pastor. Having a drink. He even offered to buy me one but just then I got kicked out.
