Pointy little fingers

What is your own pet peeve about yourself? Thank you Jake, for the prompt!

I hate myself when I let people get to me, let them get under my skin. I react when there’s no need to. Especially people who are of little significance to me.

Certain people, even though their opinions or thoughts shouldn’t matter to me, know how to find that exact spot, some without even trying, and they dig their pointy little fingers into the touchy spot til it hurts and instead of walking away I react.

By react I mean I try to prove my point, my tone changes and I probably come across as defensive.

I hate it when that happens. I need to remind myself that if I wouldn’t seek advice from that person, I also shouldn’t be bothered by their opinions.

Bella-Lena & I in 2001, yes I had to with the pleather pants & the ‘do rag lol

  2. I second that emotion! I’ve been trying (without success) to fix that about myself for more years than I care to think about. ☹️

  3. I know the feeling and it sucks. I don’t care what anyone says, even if you’re supposed to dismiss it. that feeling is super painful and it takes a lot of effort to just stay calm after you feel like your personal space was violated.

I hate that there are people who needle other people just to feel a sense of superiority or compensate as a tool to hide their own insecurities.

my social interactions since hitting my 40’s has been to spot people like that and weed them out of whatever social space I’m interacting in. I don’t like being around people like that but if there’s something I really don’t like about them, it’s when they use that weaponized snark and ruin an otherwise sweet person’s good time! I’m seeing so much of that these days. Mike

  5. I get this. Sometimes I manage but people you cannot avoid (or family) are the hardest. Like Michael, I have become selective with who I hang out. Love the picture, by the way.

  6. Same! You KNOW what the person said shouldn’t bother you, you KNOW their opinion doesn’t matter, and yet you (meaning me) will feel shitty about it for effing ever. If I could have thicker skin, I’d take it.

    1. Yes i need to be more “unbothered” 😬

      1. I’m trying to figure out how to be unbothered by being bothered, because it’s starting to seem as if bs is unavoidable and comes out of the blue too, when least expected. Maybe we have to think of it as the “allowing” of uncomfortable feelings and situations instead of trying so hard to avoid them or shut them down. -Channeling Pema Chodron here

      2. Yes this is very true, as much as i’d love to lock myself in my room and come out only on rare occasions, it’s not a very realistic solution ☺️

  8. Ive learned to ask myself if reacting is worth the energy? The conclusion is that the majority if time it’s not worth it, and work on letting it go.

    1. Yeah if i could just take a second, take a breath lol and tell myself to chill, that’s the secret sauce but I can’t seem to be able to do that!

    2. “sass package” 🙂 I have no idea what’s in one of those (or if I even want to know what’s in one of those), but I love the name. Does it require the recipient to wear gloves and goggles before opening?

  10. CJ, I think if you can come up with a way to not let those pointy little fingers in I think you could write a book and make millions of dollars. I didn’t know if Canada’s money was called ‘dollars’ so I looked it up and it is. But I do like the name “loonies”! And I also like the name “touchy spot” because to me it makes that part of us that we might be ashamed and afraid of more human and more tender.

    1. Honestly it makes me feel so much better to know that many others deal with annoying people who dig their bony fingers into others’ touchy spots lol, nice to know I’m not alone.
Lol it makes me laugh that you didn’t know our currency was in dollars, we’re not that far from the US you know 😂
And yes our one dollar bills were replaced years ago by “loonies” and our two dollar bills by “toonies”.
Thanks for the daily laugh Michael B Fishman

      1. Loonies and Toonies, I love it! I suppose I’ll have to learn all of this stuff when Canada becomes the 51st state. (bad joke, I know)

  11. No. And I don’t think very many people here want that to happen. I’m kind of hoping that day by day the border will creep south inch by inch until one day someone asks, “What happened to Minnesota?” and they find that Minnesota has become part of Canada.
