I’m alright

Do you have revenge sleep procrastination? It’s when you intentionally stay up late to have some personal time even though you know it’s going to negatively affect your sleep.

Yeah, I mean, I didn’t know it had a name but yes I do this.

I like to stay up past most everyone else’s bedtime so that I can have time to decompress.

When my three older kids, now grownups, were young, I could never fully relax until they were all in bed and I had a couple of hours to unwind. It was usually nine to eleven pm. I recall using this time to make tea and watch The Office on cable tv, (this was pre-Netflix days I think) and have a bath.

A good friend of mine used to go to bed at the same time as her kids, she let them stay up pretty late and they would go to bed together. I couldn’t believe that.

I firmly believed I’d lose my mind if I was with my kids from the second they woke up until we all went to bed together.

Then there comes that chapter in your life where the kids are staying up later than than the parents. Been there, and probably still there. Although in the evenings my three older kids are coming and going with friends etc.

As long as I can put Sid to bed and have some time to myself, I’m alright.

  1. I too, didn’t realize that this had a name, but I definitely have a revenge sleep procrastination. Not every night or anything, but sometimes I will make a point to stay up late just so I have a little downtime for myself.

I’ve always been pretty good at waking up on little sleep and getting moving, for at least a few hours in the morning. But often times when I do that, I rub out of gas by about midday.

      1. Absolutely. Sometimes we have to do what we have to do for our own peace of mind.

  4. i’m glad you had time to decompress. it’s needed. i also cannot imagine being with kids all day up until sleeping. then again, i suppose it’s to make sure they sleep. my friend is like this with her dogs, she will have them play and run and just make sure they are active. when i visit after their playtime, you wouldn’t know that she had dogs because they are sleeping like bricks in their little crates. 5. Oh I so hear you! The later hours are when we can let ourselves relax instead of doing all the things that need doing or that we think we “should” do. That’s why I always used to stay up late and be beat by the time I went to bed. It’s why I still, always, if there are small kids around, look forward to them being in bed whether they’re at my place or I’m at theirs. In recent years I’ve switched to getting up really early to get those free and quiet hours to myself before others are awake and yapping, and I go to bed earlier because I’m good and tired by then.

  9. Does Boo smell the bed or just ignore it? Maybe try putting one of your worn shirts in the bed to give him a reassuring scent?

  10. I do that on occasion if I don’t have time to read something that I really want to read.
