Sometimes it’s whatever

What’s your number one advice for relationships? Or friendships?

I think that I suck at relationships so I’m not going to speak to that other than to say, don’t lose yourself, change yourself or shrink yourself.

As for friendships, sometimes they can be challenging as well.

Bella-Lena and I each have a friend with a similar issue. They can’t seem to stay away from a certain crap relationship, no matter how poorly the guy treats them, if there are moments of sunshine and roses in between, they keep coming back for more.

It’s frustrating and stressful to see someone you love settling for a strip steak when they could be having a t-bone or ribeye (my fave is t-bone).

Not only that, for me anyway, it’s super time consuming to be on the other end of the phone texting all day long when she’s mad at him and swears she’s had enough and is done.

It’s the same old story every time. I feel like, to be a supportive friend, I have to be responsive when she’s in crisis like that and hate on him along with her. Let her know I have her back. But honestly, it’s exhausting.

And I used to think that if we both hated on him enough and I kept highlighting his awful behaviour, she’d actually end the relationship. But she never did. In fact, they took things a step further and now live together.

After three years of that I decided okay, I need to be supportive in a different way. She’s obviously never going to leave him. So now when they fight and she’s mad, I support her but instead of saying yes, you deserve better, dump his ass, I say you deserve better, why don’t you talk to him about it. And she says as if, but it’s whatever I guess.

Anyway, Bella-Lena gets very frustrated and angry with her friend who is in this same pattern with a guy and I see now that there’s no point in getting so angry about the situation. People are going to choose who they choose, sometimes it’s not the best situation but you have to be supportive regardless.

  2. For a long time, I thought that being in a relationship is the most important thing in the world. In fact, I think I was willing to compromise myself in order to do so. Time and experience has taught me otherwise.

    1. I’m no different but now as an almost fifty year old, I admire those young people who stay single and focus on other things, whose main objective isn’t finding someone. I wish I had been more like that.

      1. Yeah, it took me a little too long to learn that lesson myself

    1. It is! Like you want to be a good friend but it’s hard to know which stance to take.

  4. This exhaustive kind of dynamic would leave me supportive, but probably limiting contact a bit, honestly.

    1. It’s sooo exhausting lol but then when things are good in her relationship, pressure’s off and I can enjoy the friendship itself.

  5. It’s hard to have friends who seem to thrive on relationship chaos. I can try to be present for them, but at a certain point I have to say to myself “this person is going to do what they’re going to do…for whatever reason, my advice doesn’t speak to them.” I’m sure you’re an excellent listener!

    1. Yeah at first I thought I could really help her get away from him but once I saw that was not going to happen I realized all I can do is sit back and be supportive, not try to actually change things for her.
I don’t know about the excellent listener part lol

  7. That’s pretty rough. I admire your loyalty, endurance and patience. I’d probably run out of the last two after the 100th Groundhog Day moment.

  9. From previous experience I’ve offered advice to a friend and found myself going around and around the same roundabout when they don’t appear to listen to me and then keep coming back to me with the same issues. In the end I just stopped giving advice!

  10. Great point, CJ. I’m very direct with people. If they ask for my advice, I’ll give it, but if they come back with the same problem, the discussion changes and I start asking “why” questions. Why are you still with that person? Why are you coming back to me to talk about the same thing over and over? Why aren’t you taking action or trying to get professional help? Sometimes they get frustrated with me. I’m not trying to be an ass; I’m just trying to understand and get the person to talk about what is really behind their issue. Too many people get stuck in a bad situation, and sometimes they like it that way because they feel “safe” in that environment. I know it’s ridiculous. The reason I push back on them is that I hate having the exact same conversation more than twice.
