Do you have a name for your whip (car) or mode of transportation? If so, whatβs the name?
No I do not. I may have had nicknames for vehicles in the past, when I was younger but I don’t form the same attachments with vehicles as I used to. Don’t get me wrong, I love love love my car but nope, it’s nameless.
In other news, there’s this song from I don’t know, maybe ten years ago or more, by Walker Hayes called “Don’t Let Her”, where he’s describing his girlfriend and one of the lines goes “after church, she’s gonna talk…”
After the events of the last two days, I need to talk. So, long-post-hard-on-the-heart warning.
As most of you know, Sid came into our lives at eighteen months because he’d been in foster care since two months old and we signed up to be foster parents. He also had, I think, about six siblings who were apprehended at the same time as he was.
They were all placed in different homes.
One day about three years ago I got a message on Facebook from a lady who said she believed that she had Sid’s bio brother in her care and they lived here in town. So we chatted and exchanged pics of Jeffrey and Sid and over the next couple of years, got them together a few times for playdates. Jeffrey is just a year older than Sid.
We hadn’t seen them in quite a while but then last month I ran into her in the grocery store and I mentioned that we want to have Jeffrey over for a playdate before the end of summer. To which she said, oh I don’t have him anymore, he flipped out at home and was violent so I called the social worker and gave him back to the agency.
I was stunned. I tried to keep my face from showing how I felt and my jaw from hitting the floor. She had him since the age of one or two, and he is now nearly seven and you give him back????
How cruel. How mean. How callous. What a bitch.
I cried about that for days. Felt so very bad that the “home” he’d had for as long as he could remember, was just ripped away from him. She said “yeah so if you want to have him over, call the social worker, I don’t know where he is”.
The next day I emailed the social worker and said that we want to have Jeffrey over to play and when could that happen. She never did reply.
So then Friday afternoon I get a phone call on my way home from the store, from a different worker at the agency and she asks if I can bring Sid the following day for a birthday party for Jeffrey at the group home where he now lives. Group home. Ten other kids live there with workers.
I said yes, of course, we’ll be there but instantly I had tears rolling down my cheeks and I spent the rest of Friday and most of yesterday in tears, broken-hearted for Jeffrey. Spending his seventh birthday in a group home. Quite possible spending the rest of his life in a group home.
Just an hour before the party was to start, I still had the odd tear rolling down my cheek and I honestly wasn’t sure I could pull myself together to attend and be cheery. But I did.
The group home is both a happy and a sad place all at the same time. There were several babies/toddlers, playing on the floor in the living room, watching something similar to Cocomelon on tv. There were preschool aged kids, school aged kids and even teenagers, coming and going through the kitchen and living room.
Two of Sid’s other bio brothers were also in attendance, one he had met once before and the other he had never met. So it was very sweet to see them all get to be together.
They played Roblox on the computers there (right up Sid’s alley) and for a second it was just as though they’d always been together, Sid whining that the older ones weren’t giving him a turn, (isn’t the youngest always whiny lol), and the oldest, about to start high school, berating the two middle ones for not giving Sid a turn.
It was adorable and instantly mended those recent cracks in my heart.
No, we probably can’t take Jeffrey in. A few people have asked if we will. We honestly don’t have room. As much as I’d love for him to have an actual home and parents and love and support 24/7, part of me also worries about how it will change the dynamic in our house. You know, it’s not just as simple as, move him in.
Anyway, I’m not 100% convinced we will never take him, not completely ruling it out, but I do plan to have him in our lives on a permanent basis going forward. Sid and I will pick him up at least once a week and have him over, show him that we do care for him and see how it all goes.
I plan to have all the brothers over on a regular basis as well. At least once a month, a Friday night where they can hangout, we’ll get pizza, and they can just chill and really get to know each other and form a relationship with each other.
It’s the least I can do.
