Write about your day in great detail.
My nerves were a bit frayed all day yesterday because I knew that in the evening I would be up on the stage at the Letkeman Theatre inside of our local high school for the city council public forum.
Some people referred to it as the “debate”, which it really wasn’t, thankfully. It was all 13 candidates (including me), answering questions from the public.
We were allowed a two minute introduction each and then they moved right into the questions. Thankfully I knew a bit about the concerns in most of the questions asked.
The first question was about whether or not you would support the cost of retro-fitting our old indoor pool which was shut down due to mold, into an indoor soccer facility that could be used all year round. My answer was, of course, yes. There’s more to life than just hockey, which is the main winter sport here, unfortunately.
The soccer association provides affordable recreation to over 500 kids (last summer that’s how many played), but because of our soooo short summer months, it can only last so long. Being able to play indoors during the winter months, as well, using the space for other sports or events too, is a great idea that must come to fruition.
Okay that wasn’t my response to the question but sort of.
The other hot button issue is our library. And thankfully I spent nearly two hours last Friday after work, in the office of the manager of the library, hearing her concerns.
The Thompson Public Library is situated right downtown and so some of their concern is with people loitering, drinking and other not nice behaviours right outside their doors and windows. It’s unfortunate that the spillover of our social issues falls on the library. Besides that, the manager feels that council has been ignoring her and her issues for the last several years. While other spaces in the city seem to receive anything they ask for and have the best of anything, the library is the ugly stepsister.
Anyway, I could go on and on boring you with this but yeah, my day yesterday was fretting about how the forum would go. Would I sound stupid, would I be asked something that I had no idea how to respond to.
The kids watched on YouTube, I told Clint please do not come, I was nervous enough. The kids said I did really good but what else can they say?
