Truer cliches were never spoken

It’s Cliché Day today. What is your most used cliché or what is your favorite cliché?

I hate to admit that I love cliches. Well I don’t love them but sometimes I default to them in conversation.

Part of the Communication component in the courses I teach is around specifically communicating with patients/client/residents (in a healthcare setting), and I always admit to my students that I’m the queen of cliches. And that’s not a good thing lol.

I’m afraid to admit but “it is what it is”, is one of my faves. People who don’t like this cliche say that you can’t just throw your hands up and give up or give in, but I say that yes, sometimes you can and should.

Funny because I was thinking about this cliche yesterday morning when I was getting myself and Sid ready for the day but also boiling eggs for breakfast and snacks, “the watched pot never boils”. I was wondering if kids today would even know what that means, not likely, I’d have to decipher.

I also love these ones: love is blind (so true it’s ridiculous), there’s no place like home (especially after you’ve been away) and a rule in my house, not just figuratively but also literally, don’t cry over spilled milk.

Bella-Lena, Cordelia & I got matching tattoos on Thanksgiving weekend, I’ll post a pic of the tattoo at some point

  1. I like “it is what it is” too…especially for my mother

  2. The earliest instance of Is What It Is I can think of was the title of a cd by guitarist Mike Stern in 1996. At the time, I didn’t hear anyone else saying it. But today you can’t go anywhere without hearing it from someone. But I think it’s on the downswing at last.
